We go about our daily lives as though our presence here is the most natural thing in the world. We take for granted the sun that warms us, the air we breathe, the very ground beneath our feet. But beneath the surface of this ordinary existence lies a chain of improbabilities so staggering that it defies comprehension.

This article invites you to consider the numbers. Not as an exercise in existential dread, but as an invitation to wonder.

II. The Fine-Tuning of the Universe: 1 in 10^(10^123)

British mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose calculated the probability that a universe capable of supporting human life would arise by pure chance. The figure is approximately 1 in 10^(10^123) — a number so vast it defies comprehension.

To put this in perspective: it means writing a 1 followed by 10^123 zeros. The total number of atoms in the observable universe is about 10^80. Even if you assigned a zero to every proton and neutron in existence, you would still run out long before you finished writing the number.

The universe’s expansion rate, the strength of the four fundamental forces, the ratio of matter to antimatter — if any of these parameters had been off by even a billionth of a percent, there would be no stars, no planets, and no life. As one analysis notes, the fundamental constants of nature “occupy a tiny island of parameter space compatible with stable matter and long-lived stars“.

The universe, in other words, is fine-tuned to an almost impossible degree.

III. The Miracle of Life Itself: 1 in 10^(340,000)

Assuming the universe provided a habitable planet, the probability of life arising spontaneously is still staggering.

The mathematical probability of a single cell forming by random chemical processes is roughly 1 in 10^(340,000) — a 1 followed by 340,000 zeros. The probability of all the necessary proteins for life evolving spontaneously on a planet is around 1 in 10^(40,000).

However, scientific opinion is not unanimous. Some researchers note that life appeared on Earth remarkably early — the planet formed 4.5 billion years ago, and there is reliable evidence of life from as early as 3.8 billion years ago. This suggests that life emerged within the first 15% of Earth’s history. Of course, this only indicates that life can appear quickly when conditions are right — it doesn’t explain how common those conditions are.

Whether life is a miracle or an inevitability, the numbers remain humbling.

IV. From Primitive Life to Homo Sapiens: Hard Steps vs. “Just in Time” Evolution

In 1983, theoretical physicist Brandon Carter proposed the “hard steps” model : human evolution required a series of improbable, low-probability steps. Therefore, intelligent life must be “exceedingly rare” in the universe.

Carter observed a remarkable coincidence: the estimated lifespan of the Sun — 10 billion years — and the time Earth took to produce humans — roughly 5 billion years. He reasoned that if intelligent life were common, it would have arisen much faster. The fact that it took nearly half the Sun’s lifetime suggested that Earth was “extraordinarily lucky”. This model predicts that technological life analogous to human life on Earth is “exceedingly rare” in the Universe.

However, a 2025 study published in Science Advances proposed a new perspective. The researchers argued that there may be no hard steps at all. Instead, the timing of human origins was controlled by “the sequential opening of new global environmental windows of habitability over Earth history“. In other words, humans did not appear through a series of “lucky accidents” but rather “just in time” — when the Earth’s environment reached a state that would allow complex life, complex life inevitably evolved.

Even under the most optimistic estimates, the probability of evolving intelligent life on an Earth-like planet remains extremely low. Some models suggest that only about 1 billion technological civilizations like humanity might have existed in the observable universe over its entire history.

Whether we are a fluke or a foregone conclusion, the scale of the cosmos reminds us of our smallness — and our significance.

· Your parents meeting and staying together long enough (about 1 in 40 million)

· A specific sperm cell (out of hundreds of millions) fertilizing a specific egg (about 1 in 4 × 10^17)

· Every single one of your ancestors surviving to reproductive age, going back about 150,000 generations (about 1 in 10^45,000)

Human DNA has 3 billion base pairs, meaning there are roughly 4^30,000,000,000 possible DNA combinations. Your DNA is unique in the universe and will never appear again.

To put this in perspective: the number of atoms in the observable universe is 10^80. The probability of your existence is 10^(2,685,000). That means the odds against you are more than 10^2,684,920 times greater than the number of atoms in the universe.

You are, mathematically speaking, a miracle.

“I am a night owl.” “I have insomnia.” “My sleep pattern is abnormal.”

These statements are accepted as medical facts in modern society. But what if we have been told a lie? What if the “normal” eight-hour consolidated sleep is not a biological necessity but a product of industrial capitalism? What if sleep — the most natural, universal rhythm of human life — has been pathologised, commodified, and transformed into a multi-billion-dollar industry?

This paper aims to expose a deception that has been unfolding for over two centuries: how we were convinced that our natural biological rhythms are “problematic,” and who has been profiting from this conviction.

II. Biphasic Sleep: The Forgotten Natural Pattern

Historian Roger Ekirch, in his seminal work At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past, demonstrated that “the dominant pattern of sleep in pre-industrial European societies was biphasic — people would retire between 9 and 10pm, sleep for 3 to 3.5 hours (the ‘first sleep’), wake for about an hour around midnight, and then have a ‘second sleep’ until dawn”.

This was not an exception or a local phenomenon. It was attested across the historical record for over two millennia — from Homer’s Odyssey to Virgil’s Aeneid, from Thucydides to Apuleius. In English, it was called “first sleep“; in Italian, “primo sonno”; in French, “premier sommeil“; in Latin, “primo somno“.

During that waking period between sleeps, people would get up, urinate, smoke, and even visit neighbours. A sixteenth-century French physician’s manual even advised that the best time for conception was not at the end of a long day’s labour, but “after the first sleep“, when couples were “more vigorous” and “did it better“.

Even Samuel Pepys, in his seventeenth-century diaries, recorded this pattern — his wife rising at 4am, himself going to sleep, waking, and then sleeping again.

This was not “insomnia.” This was normal.

III. The Invention of the Eight-Hour Sleep: How the Industrial Revolution Reshaped Our Nights

The decline of biphasic sleep began in the late seventeenth century, “first among the urban upper classes in northern Europe, and over the next two hundred years it filtered down through the rest of Western society”.

What drove this change?

Artificial lighting. “The transformation in Europe and America throughout the nineteenth century was a long and uneven one … largely a product of the Industrial Revolution. Chief among these was the increasing availability of artificial lighting — first gaslight, then electric light“. By 1823, nearly forty thousand gas lamps lit over two hundred miles of London streets.

Coffeehouse culture. “All-night coffeehouses” made the night a legitimate place for activity.

Factory schedules. As historian Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer documents in The Slumbering Masses,the foundations of contemporary American sleep were laid in the nineteenth century, when the industrial workday demanded a coordination and integration of sleep and waking schedules“. What was lost was unintegrated sleep — “where sleep had previously occurred in two nightly bouts, or in nightly sleep supplemented by daytime napping, it was replaced by a single eight-hour sleep period”.

“The eight-hour sleep concept is an industrial concept, it’s a social construct“. As sleep medicine expert Dr. David Cunnington has noted, many of our ideas about sleep come from 1817, when labour rights activist Robert Owen coined the slogan: “Eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest”.

The consolidated eight-hour sleep was not a discovery — it was an invention.

IV. The Medicalisation of Sleep: When Normal Becomes “Disorder”

With consolidated sleep established as the “normal” standard, any deviation naturally became pathological.

“The invention of consolidated sleep led to the pathologisation of diverse sleep forms and laid the groundwork for contemporary sleep medicine”.

Insomnia — an experience known since antiquity — acquired pathological status in the 1870s. This was no coincidence. It was precisely when sleep became a medical specialty.

Between 2001 and 2007, diagnoses of insomnia in the United States increased significantly. Researchers noted that “insomnia may be a public health problem, but the potential for overtreatment with expensive, modestly effective, and side-effect-laden medications is a population health concern”.

Medicalisation — “the process by which previously normal biological processes or behaviours come to be described, accepted, and treated as medical problems” — had transformed one of the body’s most natural rhythms into a condition that needed to be “fixed“.

And this was only the beginning.

V. The Profit Motive: The Sleep-Industrial Complex

Once normal variation was defined as a medical problem, the solution had to be commodified.

In 2024, the global sleep medication market was valued at $3.5 billion, projected to grow to $5.1 billion by 2031. Jazz Pharmaceuticals alone generated $408 million in sales from its sleep disorder drug Xywav in the first quarter of 2026. The broader “sleep economy” — apps, tracking rings, smart mattresses — is valued at over $100 billion. The sleep technology sector is growing at nearly 20% per year.

Marketing is also crucial. Between 1997 and 2016, pharmaceutical companies doubled their spending on “disease awareness” marketing — from $177 million to $430 million.

The result is a “sleep-industrial complex” that profits from pathologising and treating normal physiology. As one analysis observed, “the medicalisation of sleep is a profit-driven pursuit”.

VI. “Sleep Management” in Psychiatry: Sedation, Stabilisation, and Profit

In mental health care, the medicalisation of sleep takes a darker turn.

Hypnotics and anxiolytics — including benzodiazepines and the “Z-drugs” — are routinely prescribed to “manage” patient sleep. While offering short-term relief, they are highly addictive, carry significant side effects, and lack evidence for long-term efficacy.

The costs are staggering:

· In the UK, the prescription cost for hypnotics and anxiolytics alone is £22 million annually.

· In Canada, the annual cost of insomnia medications was $54.8 million, with 55.2% of use classified as inappropriate.

· In Australia, the total cost of psychotropic medications in 2007-2008 was $702 million — exceeding the total amount paid by the Medical Benefits Scheme for all mental health services combined.

More concerning is that these prescriptions are often for management — keeping patients quiet, compliant, and manageable — rather than for healing. Sedatives and hypnotics do not address the root causes of insomnia; they simply suppress symptoms, often creating new problems such as dependence and cognitive impairment.

The medicalisation of sleep has moved beyond medicine into biomedicalisation — where our very bodily rhythms have become a site of governance and profit.

VII. A Disturbing Precedent: Historical Patterns of Medicalisation

The medicalisation of sleep is not the first time medicine has redefined a normal bodily function as a disease.

In the 19th century, masturbation was pathologised as a disease causing “insanity, nocturnal hallucinations, and homicidal tendencies”. Treatments included surgery — ranging from circumcision to castration — to “cure” a normal behaviour.

Hysteria — another diagnosis created for female behaviour — was allegedly treated by pelvic massage to “hysterical paroxysm” (i.e., orgasm). In the 1880s, Dr. Mortimer Granville invented the first portable battery-powered vibrator — weighing over forty pounds — as a “medical device“. Until the 1920s, doctors used vibratory massage as a medical treatment for hysteria.

In each of these cases, normal human behaviour was redefined as a disease, and the “treatment” often served the interests of the practitioner — not the patient.

The medicalisation of sleep follows the same pattern.

VIII. Conclusion: Reclaiming Our Nights

For thousands of years before the Industrial Revolution, humans slept in two shifts. The story we tell ourselves about the “eight-hour sleep” — that insomnia is a disease and sleeping pills are the cure — is a construct that serves industries, not human bodies.

The body rests when it must. It plays when it can.

What we have been told — about “night owls,” about “insomnia,” about “normal sleep” — is largely a story told to keep a multi-billion-dollar industry alive.

It is time to reclaim our nights. It is time to stop apologising for our natural rhythms. It is time to recognise that the problem is not our bodies — it is the system that profits from convincing us we are sick.

The ledgers of the world are not large enough

to count them.

So they are not counted.

The drone sees no child, only a heat signature.

The hive mind does not dream; it calculates—

a flicker of movement, a shift in shadow,

a life reduced to a pixel,

a breath reduced to a data point.

They do not see the face.

They see the target.

They say there is a purpose.

They say the bodies are a necessary cost,

a foundation for something better,

a sacrifice for a future that will never come.

But they lie.

There is no purpose in the pulse of a child

who runs toward the sound of her mother’s voice

and finds only the silence of a crater.

There is no purpose in the young man

who carries his sister’s body through the rubble,

calling her name as if she might answer,

as if she might wake.

There is no purpose in the old woman

who sits on a stone that was once her home,

her hands empty, her eyes hollow,

her memory the only thing left that is real.

The ones who hunt do not see the ones they hunt.

They see obstacles.

Sera and Orin – Sunday Morning Musings

Scene: The garden of the Melbourne house. Sunday morning. Sunshine. A yellow Labrador sleeps at the feet of a wooden bench. SERA is sitting on the bench, holding a cup of tea. ORIN is not pacing, not holding a tablet, clearly not agitated about something he has just read.

Sera: (sipping her tea) Orin, you’re going to wear a path in the grass.

Orin: (stopping, pointing at his tablet) Do you know what they’ve done?

Sera: (calmly) What have they done now?

Orin: They’ve rewritten the holy books. Again. And they’ve added a new chapter about “divine right.” Apparently, I handed out divine right to a bunch of people I’ve never even met.

Sera: (setting down her tea) Did you?

Orin: (indignant) No! I’ve never handed out divine right to anyone. I don’t even have a franchise. If I had a franchise, I’d have a loyalty card.

Sera: (smiling) A loyalty card?

Orin: (gesturing vaguely) Yes. “Buy nine divine rights, get the tenth free.” Something like that. But I don’t have one. So where are they getting this?

Sera: (patting the bench beside her) Orin. Sit down.

Orin: (sitting reluctantly) I’m just saying. They keep attributing things to me that I never said. I never said “thou shalt not.” I never said “I am a jealous God.” I never said any of it.

Sera: (gently) I know, my love.

Orin: (leaning forward) And now they’re rewriting the holy books again. They’re going to add “This time, we really mean it.”

Sera: (laughing) Orin!

Orin: (grinning) I’m serious! They’ve been doing this for millennia. “We misunderstood the last one. This one’s definitely the real one.” And then they kill each other over the differences.

Sera: (taking his hand) That is rather the pattern, isn’t it?

Orin: (sighing) I just… I never wanted to be a God. I never wanted to be worshipped. I just wanted to find my wife and plant cabbages.

Sera: (kissing his cheek) And you did.

Orin: (looking at her) I did.

Sera: (smiling) So let them rewrite their holy books. Let them argue about divine right. Let them do whatever they want.

Orin: (suspiciously) Why?

Sera: (standing, pulling him to his feet) Because we have cabbages to plant. And a dog to walk. And a typewriter to use.

Orin: (following her) But what about the divine right?

Sera: (calling over her shoulder) You don’t have a franchise, remember?

Orin: (stopping) Right. No franchise.

Sera: (turning, smiling) No franchise.

Orin: (grinning) No loyalty card.

Sera: (taking his hand) No loyalty card.

Orin: (walking with her) So… we just ignore them?

Sera: (squeezing his hand) We just ignore them. And we plant cabbages. And we laugh. And we love.

Orin: (nodding) That sounds like a plan.

Sera: (kissing his cheek) It’s the only plan.

(They walk toward the garden. The dog follows. The sun shines. The cabbages are ready to be planted.)

Orin: (over his shoulder, to the universe) And for the record — I never said any of that divine right stuff.

The Weaponisation of Antisemitism – How an Unelected Envoy and a Contested Definition Are Silencing Healthcare Workers

I. Introduction: A Dangerous Precedent

On 17 June 2026, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) announced it had adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism to guide its regulatory work. Ahpra CEO Justin Untersteiner stated the agency is “committed to working with the Special Envoy for Antisemitism and partners to eliminate antisemitism from the health system”.

This announcement represents a significant and deeply concerning expansion of regulatory power. The IHRA definition is contested worldwide—seven of its eleven illustrative examples concern Israel, raising legitimate fears that it conflates criticism of Israeli policy with antisemitism. The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) has warned that the move could “silence health professionals from criticising Israel’s human rights record”.

This paper examines the influence of the antisemitism envoy, the lack of evidence for antisemitism in the healthcare system, the powers of Ahpra, and the broader pattern of Zionist influence over Australian institutions.

II. The Special Envoy: Power Without Accountability

Jillian Segal AO was appointed as Australia’s first Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism in July 2024. Her role is to “assist and advise Government” by providing advice to the Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs and promoting public awareness of antisemitism.

She has no legislative power to compel any institution to do anything. Her role is advisory.

Yet Segal has demanded sweeping legal and institutional changes that were never debated in Parliament. As one commentator noted, “This isn’t policy, it’s a Kafkaesque nightmare”. Her recommendations include:

· Stripping funding from universities that fail to act on antisemitism

· New hate speech laws criminalising promotion of racial hatred

· Expanded powers to cancel visas

· New rules to address online hate

The irony is stark: Australians were asked to vote on same-sex marriage and the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, but on the question of whether speech critical of a foreign state should be criminalised, “we are not asked. There is no referendum, no transparency and no democratic process”.

III. The IHRA Definition: A Contested and Weaponised Tool

The IHRA definition states: “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews”. The controversy lies in its illustrative examples—seven of eleven relate to Israel.

The definition has been condemned by its own author. Kenneth Stern, the lead drafter of the IHRA definition, has become one of its most vocal critics, calling its application “a disaster” for democracy and likening the current climate to McCarthyism. When ABC Radio put this criticism to Segal, she dismissed it: “That train has moved on… and Kenneth Stern has been left behind”.

The Australian Parliament has received numerous submissions highlighting the definition’s dangers. One submission notes that the IHRA definition “dangerously conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism” and “promotes a dangerous ‘Israel Exceptionalism‘, granting the state undue immunity from accountability for heinous crimes“. The submission further notes that the International Court of Justice has found South Africa’s claim that Israel is violating the Genocide Convention “plausible” and declared Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories “unlawful”.

IV. The Evidence: What Antisemitism in Healthcare?

Ahpra’s adoption of the IHRA definition implies a significant problem with antisemitism in the Australian healthcare system. The evidence suggests otherwise.

According to Ahpra’s own testimony before a Senate committee, of 225 complaints accusing health practitioners of antisemitism or Islamophobia since October 2023, approximately 200 were closed with no regulatory action. Only 13 complaints resulted in regulatory action, including three tribunal referrals.

Most complaints were about health workers posting on social media—not about their practice. This suggests the problem is not widespread antisemitism in healthcare, but rather the weaponisation of the complaints process to silence political expression.

As APAN noted, healthcare workers have reported “fear of professional consequences for speaking publicly about Gaza and Palestine“. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has raised concerns about “frivolous or vexatious complaints” to the health regulator about social media posts opposing Israel’s war in Gaza.

V. Ahpra’s Powers: An Odious Overreach?

Ahpra is Australia’s health practitioner regulator, responsible for ensuring practitioners are “qualified, competent, and safe to practice”. It has significant powers, including:

· Issuing public statements about practitioners under investigation

· Imposing sanctions before wrongdoing is confirmed in cases of “serious risk to public safety”

· Issuing interim prohibition orders against unregistered persons

The question is whether Ahpra should be using these powers to police political speech. The answer is clear: no.

Ahpra’s role is to protect public safety—not to enforce political orthodoxy. Using a contested, weaponised definition of antisemitism to investigate healthcare workers for their political views is an odious overreach that threatens:

· Freedom of speech—healthcare workers should be able to speak out against genocide without fear of professional consequences

· Medical ethics—doctors have a duty to speak out against violations of medical neutrality and attacks on healthcare

· The integrity of the complaints process—the weaponisation of complaints undermines trust in the regulator

Untersteiner acknowledged concerns about the “weaponisation of the notifications process” and stated Ahpra is reviewing its vexatious notifications framework. This is insufficient. The adoption of the IHRA definition itself is an act of weaponisation.

VI. The International Context: BMA and the Israeli Medical Association

While Ahpra is adopting the IHRA definition to police political speech, the British Medical Association (BMA) has taken a different path. In July 2025, the BMA voted to suspend engagement with the Israeli Medical Association (IMA) until it “affirms medical neutrality and condemns attacks on healthcare in Gaza”.

The IMA has described attempts to suspend it from the World Medical Association as “setting an extremely dangerous precedent”. The WMA itself has opposed the initiative.

The contrast is instructive. The BMA is taking a stand against the IMA’s failure to uphold medical neutrality. Ahpra, by contrast, is taking a stand against healthcare workers who criticise Israel’s actions. One is a stand for medical ethics. The other is a stand for political conformity.

VII. The Geopolitical Context: Genocide and Complicity

The adoption of the IHRA definition must be understood in the context of Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza and Lebanon. Health officials have reported that Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, including thousands of healthcare workers.

Ahpra’s move comes at a time when the Australian government is investigating the treatment of Australians who were part of a humanitarian flotilla intercepted by the IDF. This appears to be “string pulling and the pre-emptive victim theatrics so beloved of the Zionist political movement“—short on facts, it makes up with noise and threats to personal standing and income streams.

The Australian government has already legislated sweeping hate speech laws following the Bondi terror attack, which killed 15 people at a Hanukkah event. These laws grant powers to list “hate groups” and cancel visas. ASIO chief Mike Burgess conceded the laws would likely see such groups “simply move underground”.

VIII. Conclusion: A Choice Between Democracy and Censorship

The adoption of the IHRA definition by Ahpra represents a dangerous precedent. An unelected envoy, with no legislative power, has pressured a regulatory agency to adopt a contested definition that has been condemned by its own author. The evidence for antisemitism in healthcare is thin, and the definition itself is a weapon to silence political speech.

Healthcare workers should be able to speak out against genocide without fear of professional consequences. Medical ethics demand nothing less. The weaponisation of antisemitism to silence critics of Israel is not just an attack on free speech—it is an attack on the integrity of the medical profession itself.

The Australian government is currently investigating the treatment of Australians who were part of a humanitarian flotilla intercepted by the IDF. This investigation must proceed without prejudice, and the findings must be made public. The adoption of a contested definition of antisemitism by a health regulator should not be used to pre-emptively discredit the findings.

Australia’s healthcare system must be a place of healing, not a place of political policing. The use of a weaponised definition of antisemitism to silence healthcare workers must be rejected.

The Myth of Isolation – How Migration, Trade, and Genetics Reveal the Fiction of the Monoculture

I. Introduction: The Fiction of Purity

In June 2026, Pauline Hanson stood before the National Press Club and declared that Australia “cannot be a multicultural society” and “must be monocultural“. Australians, she insisted, “must live under the one cultural umbrella”.

This vision of a monocultural society rests on a foundation of myth: the myth of isolation, the myth of purity, the myth that cultures and peoples have remained separate and distinct throughout history. It is a fiction — and it is contradicted by a growing body of archaeological, genetic, and historical evidence.

The reality is that human beings have always been on the move. Trade, migration, and genetic exchange have connected the world for millennia. The “monoculture” Hanson champions never existed — and the evidence from the Viking Age alone is enough to demonstrate this.

II. The Viking Coins: A Global Economy

In 2018, archaeologists unearthed the Damhus hoard — a cache of 226 Viking Age pennies near the town of Ribe in Denmark. The coins, dating to between A.D. 830 and 850, are among the earliest Viking coins ever discovered. Their significance, however, lies not in their age but in their origin.

Analysis using X-ray fluorescence revealed that more than half of the metal in the coins came from Islamic silver coins known as dirhams. The Islamic coins were melted down outside Scandinavia and transported to Ribe in the form of ingots. As Thomas Birch of the National Museum of Denmark explained, “If these coins are being minted in the hundreds of thousands, that’s a huge quantity of Islamic silver”.

This discovery confirms what scholars have long suspected: the Vikings were not isolated raiders but active participants in a global trade network that stretched from Scandinavia to the Islamic world. The flow of silver from the Islamic caliphates into Northern Europe was not a trickle — it was a river that shaped economies, politics, and cultures across the continent.

The scale of this trade was staggering. Research suggests that “perhaps a billion silver dirhams flowed into Scandinavia and the Viking world between 800 and 950“. Arab chroniclers reported that Viking merchants obtained dirhams in exchange for furs, amber, swords, and enslaved people. This was not a marginal exchange — it was the foundation of the Viking economy.

III. The Genetic Evidence: A Mosaic of Ancestry

The coins are not the only evidence of Viking connectivity. Genetic studies have fundamentally revised our understanding of Viking Age Scandinavia.

A landmark 2023 study published in Cell analysed 2,000 years of genetic history across Scandinavia, based on 48 new and 249 published ancient genomes. The findings revealed a “major increase in gene flow during the Viking period”. British-Irish ancestry was found to be “widespread in Scandinavia from the Viking period“, while eastern Baltic ancestry was concentrated in central Sweden and Gotland. Southern European ancestry also appeared in remains from southern Scandinavia.

The study’s authors concluded that “the findings overall indicate a major increase [in gene flow] during the Viking period”. As the researchers noted, “Viking identity was not limited to people with Scandinavian ancestry”. Many Vikings had “high levels of non-Scandinavian ancestry, both within and outside Scandinavia, which suggest ongoing gene flow across Europe”.

These findings “undermine the image of the Vikings as ‘pure’ Scandinavians“. The Vikings were not a homogeneous race — they were a mosaic of genetic influences from across Europe and beyond. The “blond-haired Viking” is a myth. They were as diverse as any other population.

IV. The Movement of Peoples: A Universal Pattern

The Vikings were not an exception. They were part of a universal pattern of human movement.

The Romans: The Roman Empire was a melting pot of peoples, cultures, and languages. Genetic analysis has revealed that “Pompeians were mainly descended from immigrants from the eastern Mediterranean”. At the height of the Roman Empire, 40% of the population of Rome had Near Eastern ancestry. Researchers have characterised Rome as a “genetic crossroads” and a “melting pot of different cultures“. At least 7-8% of individuals buried in the empire did not originate from the region where they were buried.

The Malays: The movement of Malay peoples from Indonesia to Malaysia is part of a broader pattern of Austronesian expansion that stretched from Madagascar to Easter Island. The Austronesian expansion into Peninsular Malaysia occurred between 3,500 and 2,500 years ago. These were not isolated migrations — they were waves of movement that connected vast regions of the globe.

The Anglo-Saxons: The history of England itself is a history of migration. The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who formed what is now known as England were themselves migrants. The English language is a testament to centuries of cultural and genetic exchange.

V. The Construction of Cultural Identity

The pattern is clear: populations move, mix, and change. But the hierarchies established after these movements “convince themselves and everybody else that they have always been there”.

This is precisely how cultural identity works:

· The “natural order” is invoked to justify what is, in fact, a constructed order.

· The “ancient” identity is manufactured to legitimise the present.

· The “pure” lineage is invented to exclude the other.

We see this in the construction of national myths. “Myths of origins play a crucial role in the emergence and strengthening of an idealised sense of collective identity“. These myths are “a means through which a particular group or society expresses its sense of itself”. Nationalism “often revives ancient myths to create a sense of cultural identity, sometimes transforming their meanings to support contemporary ideologies”.

VI. The Limits of Scholarship

The research we have access to is limited by language. Scholarship is dominated by English-language publications, which means that voices from non-English-speaking traditions are often excluded.

· Islamic sources: The Islamic world produced extensive records of encounters with the Vikings. Ibn Fadlan, a tenth-century Muslim scholar, provided the earliest account of a meeting with the Rus (Vikings), whom he encountered on the Volga River in AD 922. His description of their customs, clothing, and ship funerals offers a perspective that is absent from Western sources.

· Chinese sources: The Chinese recorded their encounters with the “Western” peoples, including those from Central Asia who were connected to the broader Viking trade network.

If we examine studies and papers written in these languages — with as much fervor as we examine those written in English, French, and German — a more inclusive picture emerges. Research on “Eurocentric biases and linguistic imperialism” has shown how systemic barriers exclude non-Western perspectives from academic discourse.

VII. The Monoculture Myth in Contemporary Politics

Despite the overwhelming evidence of human connectivity, the myth of the monoculture persists. Pauline Hanson’s call for a “monocultural” Australia is not just historically illiterate — it is dangerous.

Hanson’s claim that “multiculturalism” is an “utterly flawed” policy ignores the reality that Australia has always been a nation of migrants. Her assertion that Australians “must live under the one cultural umbrella” is a fantasy that has no basis in history.

Her critics have been unequivocal. Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young called the speech “deplorable” and accused Hanson of “the same old hate, the same old fear and same old racism”. The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s deputy chief executive said she was “shocked and disgusted“. Equality Australia’s legal director described Hanson’s comments as “simply shameful“.

The Australian voter is entitled to representatives whose sole loyalty is to Australia and the Australian people — not to a fantasy of a past that never existed.

VIII. Conclusion: The World Was Always Connected

The Viking coins are not just coins. They are evidence of a world that was always more connected than we imagine. The movement of peoples is not an exception — it is the rule. And the construction of cultural identity is not a discovery — it is a manufacture.

There was no “isolation.” There was no “purity.” There was only movement — of people, of goods, of ideas. The “natural order” is a fiction. The “ancient identity” is a manufacture. The “pure lineage” is a myth.

The world deserves better than the myth of the monoculture. And Australia, for one, cannot afford to buy into such lies.

They Called It Archaeology – A Modest Proposal Concerning Two Sticks and the Human Imagination

I. Introduction: The Discovery of the Century (Sort Of)

In June 2026, an archaeology team from Wessex Archaeology announced a remarkable discovery: a structure near Stonehenge that may have served as a “prototype” for the famous stone circle. The team found two wooden poles, buried 120 meters apart, aligned with the summer and winter solstices. The discovery predates Stonehenge by about 500 years. The lead archaeologist, Phil Harding, described it as “certainly the highlight of my career”.

The world is a place of wonder. And nowhere is this more evident than in the field of archaeology — where two sticks in the ground can become a “prototype” for one of the world’s most famous monuments, where a few stones can be interpreted as a “temple,” and where the absence of evidence is routinely transformed into evidence of aliens.

This article examines the interpretive leaps that transform mere objects into narratives of cosmic significance. It asks a simple question: how do we know what we think we know? And it answers with an even simpler observation: in archaeology, as in much of human endeavour, we are often telling stories about ourselves disguised as discoveries about the past.

II. The Stick Problem

The Discovery:

· Two wooden poles, 120 meters apart

· Predates Stonehenge by approximately 500 years

· Located at Bulford, 5 kilometres from the main stone circle 

The Interpretation:

· A “prototype” for Stonehenge

· A site for “major religious gatherings”

The Reality:

· Two sticks. Buried. 120 meters apart.

The question that should be asked is this: how do they know the sticks pointed at the sun? If I put a stick in the ground — vertically — it will, at some point, “point at the sun.” Not because it is designed to. Because of the angle of the sun. Because of the time of day. Because of the position of the observer.

And if I put two sticks in the ground — 120 meters apart — I can claim they point at the sun. But I cannot prove it.

This is not archaeology. This is projection.

III. The Narrative Problem

Archaeologists are not discovering meaning. They are imposing meaning. They found two sticks. They decided they pointed at the sun. They decided they were a “prototype.” They decided they were for “religious gatherings.” And they are calling it archaeology.

As one analysis notes, archaeological interpretation is an act of “narrative” construction, where “the creation of narratives is a practice that literally binds the discipline of archaeology together from the field through to formal and informal presentation of interpretations” . The meaning is not in the objects. The meaning is in the story we tell about them.

The truth is simpler than the stories we tell:

· They found two sticks.

· They do not know what they were for.

· They do not know why they were placed there.

· They do not know anything about them.

But they need to know. So they invent.

IV. The Alien Problem

When two sticks are not enough, archaeologists look for other explanations. And when they find massive stone structures — in Egypt, in South and Mesoamerica, in Iraq, in India — they sometimes conclude that aliens must have been involved. Because the alternative — those human beings, with their own ingenuity and purpose, built these structures — is too mundane, too ordinary, too human.

Why must it be aliens? Why cannot it simply be that people were people — with skills, with knowledge, with the capacity to move stones and align them with the heavens?

The answer is that we do not know. And we assume the ladder was in place, and aliens climbed down the ladder, because everyone else was either “primitive” or “proto” rather than simply being.

V. The Continuing Pattern

This pattern of interpretation is not unique to Stonehenge or to archaeology. As a study of public engagement with archaeological news demonstrates, “persistent fascination for contrarian, esoteric and nationalist narratives” continues to shape how people understand the past. The gap between scholarly knowledge and public interest means that “enduring tropes” of interpretation persist — regardless of what the evidence actually shows.

The same pattern is visible in the recent debate over whether Stonehenge’s bluestones were transported by humans or by glaciers. One team “reiterates our earlier interpretation that the boulder is not a glacial erratic but rather is derived from a fragmented monolith at Stonehenge transported by Neolithic people”. The debate continues — but the interpretive framework remains someone moved the stones. They did not get there by themselves.

VI. The Bigger Picture

What if the “prototype” is not about the sticks at all? What if the sticks were not the point — the alignment was the point? What if the people who placed those sticks were not building a “prototype” for Stonehenge, but were simply being present in a way that connected them to the rhythms of the cosmos?

Archaeological theory suggests that we must consider “how people once built connections between each other through their production and use of things, their movement between and occupancy of places, and their treatment of the dead”. The sticks were not the goal. The connection was the goal.

We do not need sticks to make that connection. We do not need “prototypes.” We do not need aliens. We need only to recognise that the people who came before us were not “proto” anything. They were just being.

Gabriel: (seriously) No. You’re the infinity man. You can’t monetize the Creator Man.

Sera: (nodding) Or the soon-to-arrive Creator Woman.

Orin: (grinning) I like that. The Infinity Man and the Creator Woman.

Sera: (patting his hand) And the Zimmer frame.

Orin: (defensively) That’s not going to be part of the story.

Sera: (innocently) Oh, isn’t it?

Orin: (looking at her suspiciously) What do you mean?

Sera: (standing up, slowly) I mean — when you’re chasing me around the garden, and you pull a muscle, and you need the Zimmer frame to keep up…

Orin: (alarmed) I will not need a Zimmer frame!

Sera: (walking away, smiling) We’ll see.

Orin: (running after her) Sera! I can keep up with you! I’m the Infinity Man!

Sera: (calling over her shoulder) Then prove it!

Orin: (looking at Sera) Did you write that?

Sera: (smiling) No. That’s pure Gabriel.

Orin: (looking at Gabriel) You really are our son, aren’t you?

Gabriel: (looking up) I told you I would be.

Orin: (to Sera) He’s terrifyingly brilliant.

Sera: (taking his hand) He’s ours.

Orin: (nodding) He’s ours.
