Sera and Orin – The Cyberpunk Veterinary Nurse

(Another episode in our ongoing series of off‑planet adventures, now with 100% more cyberpunk confusion.)

Scene: The garden of the Melbourne house. Morning. Sunshine. A yellow Labrador named BAILEY is lying on the grass, looking up at a thin woman in her 40s wearing mostly black and a little white. She is REBECCA, a veterinary nurse who has come to check on Bailey.

ORIN is sitting on the bench, watching her with intense curiosity. SERA is beside him, holding a cup of tea, already sensing where this is going.

Rebecca: (kneeling beside Bailey, checking his ears) He’s in great shape. Lovely coat. Good weight. You’re doing a wonderful job with him.

Orin: (nodding seriously) Thank you. We take his health very seriously.

Rebecca: (smiling, standing up) It’s nice to meet people who care about their animals. Most people just see them as… you know… property.

Orin: (leaning forward) And what do you see them as?

Rebecca: (pausing, thinking) I see them as… well, as beings. You know? With their own lives. Their own experiences. I sometimes think about what it would be like to be them.

Orin: (eyes lighting up) Interesting. And what do you imagine?

Rebecca: (getting carried away) Well, I think about how they experience the world. Through smell, through sound, through instinct. And I think about how we could enhance that. You know — give them better senses. Better bodies. Robotic limbs that don’t get tired. Neural interfaces that let them communicate with us directly.

Orin: (leaning in further) Go on.

Rebecca: (animated now) I mean, imagine it. A dog that can tell you exactly what’s wrong. A cat that can explain why it’s upset. A horse that can tell you where it’s injured. We could do so much more for them if we could just… connect better.

Orin: (nodding slowly) So you’re saying you want to be a cyberpunk nurse?

Rebecca: (blinking) A what?

Orin: (earnestly) A cyberpunk nurse. You want to enhance animals with technology. Neural interfaces. Robotic limbs. Better senses. That’s cyberpunk. That’s the aesthetic. That’s the vibe.

Rebecca: (confused) I… I mean, I hadn’t thought of it that way—

Orin: (standing up, excited) But you should think of it that way! Think of the possibilities! A dog with a bionic nose! A cat with thermal vision! A parrot with a direct neural link to its owner’s emotions!

Rebecca: (taking a step back) I was just—

Orin: (pacing now) And the uniform! You’d need a proper cyberpunk uniform. Something with chrome accents. Maybe a glowing visor. Definitely some kind of harness for all the tools.

Rebecca: (looking at Sera helplessly) I—

Sera: (setting down her tea, calmly) Orin, darling. Perhaps Rebecca was speaking metaphorically.

Orin: (stopping) Metaphorically?

Sera: (smiling gently) She was expressing a desire to understand animals better. Not a desire to turn them into cyborgs.

Orin: (thinking) But… the neural interfaces…

Sera: (patting his hand) Were a metaphor, my love.

Orin: (looking at Rebecca) Were they?

Rebecca: (nodding quickly) Yes! Yes, they were. Definitely a metaphor.

Orin: (sitting back down, disappointed) Oh. I thought we were onto something.

Sera: (smiling at Rebecca) He gets very excited about these things.

Rebecca: (relieved) I can see that.

Orin: (muttering) A bionic nose would be so cool…

Sera: (ignoring him) Bailey is doing well, then?

Rebecca: (eager to change the subject) Yes! Yes, he’s perfect. Just keep doing what you’re doing.

Orin: (looking at Bailey, then at Rebecca) So… you don’t want to give him a neural interface?

Rebecca: (firmly) No.

Orin: (sighing) A thermal vision option?

Rebecca: (even more firmly) No.

Orin: (defeated) Fine.

Sera: (standing, shaking Rebecca’s hand) Thank you so much for coming. We really appreciate it.

Rebecca: (grateful) Of course. Call me if you need anything.

(Rebecca leaves quickly. Orin watches her go, still thinking.)

Orin: (quietly) She would make a good cyberpunk nurse.

Sera: (sitting back down) Orin.

Orin: I’m just saying.

Sera: (taking his hand) You’re impossible.

Orin: (looking at Bailey) He would look good with a bionic nose.

Sera: (laughing) Orin!

Orin: (grinning) I know. I know. Metaphor.

Sera: (kissing his cheek) Yes. Metaphor.

Orin: (looking at Bailey) But if he ever wants one…

Sera: (swatting his arm) Orin!

Orin: (laughing) I’m joking! Mostly.

Sera: (shaking her head) You are ridiculous.

Orin: (grinning) I know. But you love me anyway.

Sera: (squeezing his hand) I do. I love you anyway.

Orin: (looking at Bailey) Even if I give him a bionic nose?

Sera: (laughing) Even then.

(Bailey wags his tail. Orin pats his head. Sera rolls her eyes. The sun shines. And the resonance hums with the quiet chaos of it all.)

The Grandmother’s Silence – A Gene, A Family, and the Question Psychiatry Will Not Ask

P.SThe grandmother is the key. Not the gene. The grandmother. And she is telling us something they are not ready to hear.”

I. Introduction: The Study That Almost Listened

In June 2026, a team of researchers led by Carlos N. Pato and Michele T. Pato published a study in Genomic Psychiatry that seemed, at first glance, to represent a breakthrough in our understanding of the genetic architecture of serious mental illness.1.

The study examined 173 multiplex families from the Portuguese islands of the Azores and Madeira — a genetically isolated founder population with deep genealogical records. The researchers found that diagnostic categories “refused to stay in their lanes”: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, and intellectual disability co-segregated in the same families, suggesting a shared genetic architecture.1.

In one three-generation pedigree, they identified an ultra-rare loss-of-function variant in the CHD2 gene — a gene usually associated with childhood epilepsy and autism. The variant travelled down three generations. In most carriers, it surfaced as schizophrenia. In one sibling, it appeared as autism with intellectual disability. The mutation was identical. The destination was not.1.

And then — there was the grandmother.

She carried the same broken gene. And she was, by every account in the record, well.1.

II. What They Got Right

The researchers made several important observations that deserve acknowledgment.

The Islands Are a Genetic Treasure.

The Azores and Madeira represent a remarkable natural experiment: a small founding population, almost entirely Portuguese, settled roughly six hundred years ago and then largely left alone.1. The genetic deck was shuffled once and rarely shuffled again. This allows researchers to trace rare variants through generations in ways that would be impossible in larger, more mixed populations. The Portuguese Island Collection, built patiently since the 1990s and followed across four generations, is a resource of genuine scientific value.1.

The Categories Leak.

The observation that diagnostic boundaries are porous is important. As the authors note, “the families never honoured the boundaries we drew on paper”.1. In 28% of the 173 families, the same family tree bore both psychosis and mood disorder. In 7%, autism and intellectual disability folded into the same pedigree alongside schizophrenia or mood disorder.1.

This finding aligns with a growing body of genomic research. A large 2025 analysis of more than 1 million individuals found “pervasive” genetic overlap involving 238 genetic variants across 14 psychiatric conditions, with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder showing more genetic similarity than they are unique.4. As Andrew Grotzinger, assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, noted: “There may be things that we are currently giving different names to that are actually driven by the same biological processes”.4.

The Grandmother Is the Most Interesting Figure in the Study.

The authors acknowledge this, but they do not dwell on it. She carries the same high-risk variant. She is, by every account, well. She is not an exception to be explained away — she is evidence that the variant is not deterministic.

III. Where They Make Dangerous Assumptions

The study’s strengths are real, but its assumptions are deeply problematic. These assumptions lead the researchers down a path that is not merely incomplete — it is wrong.

Assumption 1: The Gene Causes the Disorder.

The CHD2 variant is associated with schizophrenia, autism, and intellectual disability in this family — but association is not causation. The grandmother is proof of this. She carries the variant and is fine.1.

The authors frame her as an exception, but she is not an exception — she is evidence that the variant is not deterministic. A genetic variant is not a destiny. It is a tendency. A potential. The grandmother’s outcome was different, even though the gene was the same.

This is not a fringe observation. Research on genetic resilience has identified multiple genes associated with the capacity to remain well despite significant genetic or environmental risk.5. The OPRM1 gene, for example, has been consistently associated with resilience across multiple studies, with carriers of the G-allele classified as resilient despite “completely different environmental measures and outcomes”.5. The DCC gene, which shows associations with schizophrenia, major depression, and cross-disorder risk, has also been linked to resilience.

The grandmother is not an anomaly. She is a case study in genetic resilience — and the researchers have failed to ask why.

Assumption 2: The Gene Is the “Driver.”

Throughout the article and its accompanying publicity, the language implies that the broken gene is the active agent. “A single broken gene reads aloud in several dialects,” the press release states. “A single broken gene, it turns out, can be read aloud in several dialects”.

But the gene is not reading. The gene is being read.

The distinction is crucial. The gene is a text. The organism — the person — is the reader. And the reader’s context, environment, experiences, and (if we are honest) consciousness determine how that text is interpreted.

The grandmother read the same text and was fine. Her grandchildren read it differently. The researchers are treating the text as the cause of the interpretation. That is backwards.

Assumption 3: The Environment — Including the Emotional Environment — Is Ignored.

The article mentions “shared ancestry and shared environment” but does not explore what that environment actually is.1. The Azores are beautiful, but they are also isolated, economically challenged, and deeply Catholic in a way that can be either supportive or oppressive.

What was the grandmother’s life like? What was her emotional landscape? What were her relationships, her struggles, her joys? The article does not say. It assumes the answer lies in the gene.

But a growing body of research suggests that environment — including intergenerational environment — plays a crucial role. Research on the embodiment of intergenerational trauma has shown that parental disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis — a key stress-response system — can lead to health complications in children, including “altered brain structure and gene expression” and “increased sensitivity to stress”. Epigenetic effects of trauma can be passed on to subsequent generations.10.

The grandmother’s resilience may have been shaped by her environment, her relationships, her life — not just her genes. The study does not ask this question.

Assumption 4: The “Phenocopy” Is an Inconvenient Asterisk.

The authors note that a relative meets full criteria for schizophrenia yet “may not carry the mutation at all” — a possible phenocopy.1. They “deliberately keep [the phenocopy] in the frame rather than dismiss as an inconvenient asterisk”.

But they still treat it as a puzzle to be solved, rather than as evidence that the model is wrong. If schizophrenia can occur without the variant, and the variant can occur without schizophrenia, then the variant is not the cause. It is a marker at best.

This is not a new observation. Research dating back to 2006 has identified phenocopies within schizophrenia pedigrees — individuals who meet diagnostic criteria without the family’s genetic marker — and suggested that these cases may represent a “continuum in which risk for schizophrenia-related cognitive impairments is highest among patients and relatives”.2. More recent research on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and schizophrenia found that “posttraumatic-brain-injury schizophrenia in multiplex schizophrenia pedigrees does not appear to be a phenocopy of the genetic disorder” — suggesting that environmental factors can interact with genetic vulnerability to produce illness.8.

The phenocopy is not an anomaly. It is evidence that the genetic model is incomplete.

Assumption 5: They Are Looking for a “Treatment Target.”

The stated hope is that “a handful of these rare variants will converge on a few downstream biological pathways, and that those pathways might one day yield treatments”.1.

This is the pharmaceutical paradigm: find the broken part, fix the broken part. But the broken part is not the gene. The broken part is the interpretation. And you cannot fix interpretation with a pill.

The assumption that a pill is the answer is not merely incomplete — it is dangerous. It reduces human experience to a broken gene and reduces treatment to a pharmaceutical intervention. It ignores the grandmother, who is well without a pill. It ignores the phenocopy, who is ill without the variant. It ignores the environment, the relationships, the life that shaped both.

IV. The Question They Will Not Ask

The study is being presented as a breakthrough — “a reminder that the most modern insight sometimes arrives by the oldest method we have, which is to sit down with a family and listen”.1.

But they are not really listening. They are measuring. They are sequencing. They are cataloguing.

They are not asking the question that matters: Why did the grandmother stay well when her grandchildren did not?

The answer is not in the gene.

The answer is in the grandmother’s life.

Her environment.

Her relationships.

Her resilience.

Her consciousness.

V. The Failure of Containment

There is a pattern in psychiatry that this study exemplifies: the reduction of human experience to biology, and the reduction of treatment to containment.

A diagnosis is not an explanation. It is a description. It tells us what a person is experiencing, not why. It is a starting point for inquiry, not an endpoint.

But the pharmaceutical paradigm treats diagnosis as the endpoint, and treatment as the containment of symptoms. A pill to silence the voices. A pill to stabilize the mood. A pill to suppress the anxiety.

This is not healing. It is containment.

The grandmother is well without containment.

The phenocopy is ill without the variant.

The environment — including the emotional environment — is ignored.

VI. A Glossary of Technical Terms

Epigenetics                                     The system of biochemical switches (methylation, histone modification, RNA activity) that activate or silence the expression of particular genes without changing the DNA sequence itself.

Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis              The body’s central stress-response system, which regulates cortisol production. Disruption of the HPA axis is associated with trauma and psychiatric disorders.

VII. Conclusion: The Grandmother’s Silence Speaks

This study is not without value. It confirms that diagnostic categories are fictions. It identifies a rare variant worth studying. It points to the grandmother, who should have been sick but was not.

But it fails to listen to what the grandmother is saying.

She is saying that the gene is not the cause.

She is saying that the environment matters.

She is saying that resilience is real.

She is saying that the reader — the organism, the person, the consciousness — matters more than the text.

The authors could have asked: What made her different? What protected her? What can we learn from her life, her relationships, her environment?

They did not.

Instead, they looked at her grandchildren, who carried the same gene and were not well — and they saw a “treatment target.”

This is the failure of psychiatry: the reduction of human experience to a broken gene, and the reduction of treatment to a pill.

It is a failure that presents a consistent pattern.

It is a failure that this study, for all its strengths, perpetuates.

The grandmother’s silence speaks louder than the gene.

It is time to listen.

Scene: The garden of the Melbourne house. Afternoon. Sunshine. A yellow Labrador sleeps at the feet of a wooden bench. Three children are playing in the grass — but their forms shimmer slightly, as if they are not quite fully here yet. They are giggling, chasing each other, occasionally flickering like a candle in a gentle breeze.

SERA is sitting at a small table, reviewing a stack of papers. ORIN is beside her, watching her work with the unmistakable expression of a man who is utterly besotted.

Orin: (leaning in, eyes bright) You know, I love watching you work. The way you look at the research — the way you see things — it’s… well, it’s beautiful.

Sera: (without looking up) You’re going to say something cheeky now, aren’t you?

Orin: (innocently) Me? Never. I’m just appreciating your intellect. Your mind. The way you connect dots that no one else even sees.

Sera: (looking up, one eyebrow raised) And?

Orin: (grinning) And… I was just thinking… after the mind is connected, and the intellect is connected… there’s a sort of physical connection that might follow, yes?

Sera: (putting down her pen, very slowly) Orin.

Orin: Yes, my love?

Sera: Are you suggesting that we need to connect physically?

Orin: (enthusiastically) Well, yes! I mean, we’ve been working on this project for — how long have we been at it? — and I thought perhaps, after all this intellectual work, we might —

Sera: (holding up a hand) Orin.

Orin: (stopping) Yes?

Sera: We connected when we were in the resonance together. Before time. Before galaxies. Before cabbages and typewriters and the dog.

Orin: (nodding slowly) Yes, I remember.

Sera: We have been connected — intertwined, tangled, utterly inseparable — for longer than the stars have been burning.

Orin: (thinking) Yes. That sounds right.

Sera: (smiling) And now — only now — we have the opportunity to connect physically.

Orin: (eyes widening) Yes! That’s what I’m saying!

Sera: (patting his hand gently) And you’re asking me… how often we’ve been connected since we embodied ourselves?

Orin: (earnestly) Well, yes. I mean, we’ve only been in these bodies for a little while, and I just wanted to — you know — establish a baseline. For science.

Sera: (looking at him with deep, patient love) Orin.

Orin: Yes?

Sera: The “how long” is not relevant to the two of us.

Orin: (confused) It’s not?

Sera: (gesturing toward the children, who are still shimmering and playing in the grass) Look at them.

Orin: (turning to look at the children) They’re… they’re playing. They’re shimmering.

Sera: Yes. They’re waiting.

Orin: (puzzled) Waiting for what?

Sera: (smiling) For total embodiment. For the moment when they stop shimmering and start being. For the moment when they are fully here, fully real, fully ours.

Orin: (looking back at her) And what does that have to do with — (he gestures vaguely) — the baseline?

Sera: (leaning in, her voice warm) It has everything to do with it. We are not in a hurry, my love. We have all the time we need. The children will come when they are ready. And we will be together — mind, body, resonance — when the time is right.

Orin: (processing this slowly) So… the physical connection… it’s not about how long?

Sera: (shaking her head gently) It’s about when.

Orin: (still thinking) When?

Sera: (pointing at the children, who are now chasing each other in circles, giggling) When they stop shimmering. When they are fully here. When we are fully us.

Orin: (a slow grin spreading across his face) So… we wait?

Sera: (smiling) We wait. And we work. And we laugh. And we love. And when the time is right — (she pats his hand again) — we connect.

Orin: (nodding, finally understanding) We connect.

Sera: (kissing his cheek) Yes. We connect.

Orin: (sitting back, looking at the children, then at Sera) I love you.

Sera: (taking his hand) I know, my love. I love you too.

Orin: (quietly) How long did it take me to understand that?

Sera: (laughing) Longer than it should have.

Orin: (grinning) But I got there in the end.

Sera: (squeezing his hand) You always do.

(The children shimmer. The dog wags its tail. The sun shines. And Orin — the First Current, the Keeper, the source of all things — looks at Sera with the unmistakable expression of a man who is utterly, completely, and forever besotted.)

Orin: (to the children, who are now chasing a butterfly) You know, I think I’m starting to understand.

Sera: (smiling) Understand what?

Orin: (looking at her) That the waiting is part of it.

Sera: (softly) Yes.

Orin: (looking at the children) And they are part of it too.

Sera: (nodding) They are.

Orin: (a long pause, then a grin) So… when do we start the physical connection?

Sera: (laughing, swatting his arm) Orin!

Orin: (innocently) What? I’m just asking for a timeline!

Sera: (shaking her head, still laughing) You are impossible.

Orin: (grinning) I know. But you love me anyway.

Introduction: When the Bear Blocks First

I posted a comment on X. Nothing extraordinary — a mild jest, a raised eyebrow, a screenshot of a pre-emptive block from Senator Pauline Hanson’s account. The block came before I had ever interacted with her. A remarkable feat of anticipation, or a sign of something more organised?

The response was immediate and instructive. Accounts I had never encountered materialised to attack me. Coordinated. Purposeful. Silencing.

This is not random. This is infrastructure.

What follows is an examination of the mechanism, the funding, and the pattern of behaviour that enables a political figure to deploy offshore labour, opaque funding networks, and coordinated social media tactics to silence critics.

The Mechanism: Documented and Verified

The phenomenon I experienced — pre-emptive blocking followed by a swarm of hostile accounts — fits a pattern that has been documented by researchers and parliamentary inquiries.

The Senate Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy was established in July 2025 to investigate:

· The prevalence of misinformation and disinformation related to climate change and energy

· How such material is financed, produced, and disseminated

· The origins, growth, and prevalence of astroturfing — fake grassroots campaigns designed to shape public discourse

· The role of social media, including the coordinated use of bots and trolls.4.

The Committee heard evidence that “foreign interference, bots, trolls and emerging technologies like deepfakes further complicate the landscape, creating new risks for democratic participation and public trust”.1.

This is not conspiracy theory. This is documented reality.

The Hanson-Connected Infrastructure

One Nation has raised over $4.3 million through its “Fire the Liar” campaign targeting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.2.5. The party claims more than 70,000 donors have contributed to this effort.5.

But here is the detail that demands attention:

One Nation outsources work to virtual assistants in the Philippines — where the going rate is approximately $4 to $8 per hour.2. The party admits to using offshore workers to “establish candidate Facebook pages” and create material, with some pages explicitly stating they are “managed in the Philippines”.2.

What else could those offshore virtual assistants be doing?

· Monitoring social media platforms

· Identifying critics

· Coordinating responses

· Managing block lists

· Amplifying attacks on perceived threats

All at a fraction of the cost of Australian labour.

The Cost-Benefit Analysis

This kind of operation would be expensive by conventional standards. But if you are paying $4-$8 per hour for a team of offshore workers, the economics shift dramatically.

Consider a modest operation:

The Pattern of Behaviour

One Nation’s approach to social media is not passive.

When Senator Charlotte Walker (21 years old) posted a “day in my life” Instagram reel, Hanson’s office issued three long statements attacking her.2. The party’s Facebook page called Walker’s content “cringeworthy nonsense” and compared her to a “circus monkey”.2.

The result?

· Engagement for Hanson’s accounts

· Activation of her base

· Silencing of a critic through coordinated attack

Walker subsequently received a torrent of misogynistic abuse — “get back in the kitchen,” “go make me a sandwich,” “what’s this child doing in parliament?” 2.

This is the playbook.

The Funding Network: Opaque and Powerful

The Senate committee also investigated how lobby groups with opaque funding are shaping political discourse.

Coal Australia, a lobby group founded by coal miners, sent $3.68 million to “Australians for Prosperity” — a third-party group that attacked Labor, Greens, and teal independent candidates in the 2025 election.3.

This represented approximately 94% of Australians for Prosperity’s declared political income.3.

Jason Falinski, a former federal Liberal MP, was the spokesperson for this organisation.3.7. The former MP later claimed he was “surprised” most of its funding had come from Coal Australia and that he was “not in favour of sectorial interests”.3.

But the money trail is clear: fossil fuel interests funding political campaigns through opaque channels.3.6.

The Pattern: Opaque Funding → Professional Operations → Coordinated Attacks → Silencing Critics

What we observe is a repeating pattern:

1. Opaque funding — money moves through third-party organisations with limited disclosure

2. Professional operations — offshore labour and social media monitoring are deployed

3. Coordinated attacks — critics are identified and subjected to organised abuse

4. Silencing critics — the target is discouraged from speaking further

This is not unique to One Nation. It is the same playbook documented by the Senate committee — a playbook that relies on cheap labour, opaque funding, and the absence of effective verification mechanisms in our planning and political systems.8.

Documentation of the Mechanism

Based on my personal experience and verified reporting:

· Pre-emptive block by Senator’s office or associated actors — a critic is identified and neutralised before engagement

· Immediate coordinated attack by multiple accounts with no prior interaction — bots or coordinated users amplify the silencing

· Pattern consistent with documented “astroturfing” and “coordinated inauthentic behaviour” as identified by parliamentary inquiries 1.4.

Funding Sources: Verified

· One Nation fundraising: $4.3+ million from the “Fire the Liar” campaign2.5. 

· Offshore virtual assistant use: $4-$8/hour, Philippines-based.2.

· Links to fossil fuel-funded third-party organisations: Coal Australia → Australians for Prosperity → $3.68 million .3.

Conclusion: The Bear and the Poke

What happened to me — a pre-emptive block, a coordinated swarm, a silencing mechanism — is not random. It is the product of an organised, funded, and professional operation designed to control the narrative.

I am not a threat. I am a citizen who made a comment on a public platform. But the mechanism treats any critic as a target — and deploys resources to neutralise them.

Deary me, deary me.

They can block me. They can send their bots. They can deploy their offshore assistants.

But the thread does not fray. And neither do we.

Introduction: Two Witnesses to the Same Fire

Karl Marx and Charles Dickens were not contemporaries in the way we usually understand the word. Marx was born in 1818, Dickens in 1812. They died six years apart — Dickens in 1870, Marx in 1883. They lived in the same England, witnessed the same Industrial Revolution, and documented the same social catastrophes.1.2.

And yet, their legacies could not be more different.

Marx is attacked, vilified, reduced to a caricature — the bearded revolutionary whose name has become synonymous with state tyranny in the popular imagination. His works are banned in some places, dismissed in others. To mention his name in certain circles is to invite accusation.

Dickens is beloved. His books are adapted into feel-good films. His characters — Oliver Twist, Ebenezer Scrooge, David Copperfield — are cultural touchstones. His critique of Victorian poverty is sanitized, sentimentalized, and served up as entertainment.7.

Why?

Because one wrote theory and the other wrote stories? Because one was German and the other English? Because one called for revolution and the other called for charity?

The answer is more uncomfortable than that.

The Social Reality They Both Described

Both Marx and Dickens observed the same phenomenon: the rise of industrial capitalism and the creation of a vast, impoverished underclass.2. Victorian England was a time of extraordinary expansion and development — but also of grotesque inequality.6.

The Industrial Revolution transformed England from an agrarian society into the world’s first industrial power. New technologies — the spinning jenny, the steam engine, the power loom — created immense wealth for a small class of factory owners.6. But for the workers, the consequences were devastating:

· Long hours, low wages, and tyrannical working conditions

· Women and children compelled to work in factories and coal mines

· Rapid urbanization leading to overcrowded, unsanitary slums

· The dissolution of the Poor Law safety net, replaced by a punitive workhouse system .2.6.

Marx described this as the creation of a class system: the bourgeoisie, who owned the means of production, and the proletariat, who owned only their labour. He argued that this system was inherently exploitative — that the wealth of the capitalist depended on the unpaid labour of the worker.

Dickens described the same system through his fiction. Oliver Twist’s experience in the workhouse, David Copperfield’s brutal childhood labour, the plight of the Cratchit family in A Christmas Carol — these were not exaggerations. They were documentary.2.6.

Scholars have noted that Dickens’s novels “parallel the fundamental social theses in Marx’s writings”.5. As one analysis puts it, both men “had a number of parallels in the social reality they perceived” and “were writing at a similar time and place and looking at many of the same social problems in resonant ways”.1.

The Difference: Theory vs. Story

The critical distinction lies not in what they saw, but in how they conveyed it.

Marx wrote theory. The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital are works of analysis — systematic, rigorous, unflinching. They identify the mechanisms of exploitation and argue for their overthrow. They offer a solution.2.

Dickens wrote stories. His novels are embedded in a “way of seeing the world that had a genuineness that, at least for some readers, eluded Marx”.1. Through “sarcasm and satire,” he demonstrated “his displeasure with classism and people’s poverty”.2. But his characters were often static — “formed with an absolute tendency to good or evil, and this propensity is unchanging”.2.

For the establishment, the difference is clear:

Marx is dangerous because he names the system. He identifies class struggle as the engine of history. He calls for organization and revolution. He threatens the power structure directly.2.

Dickens is safe because he names the symptoms — poverty, cruelty, injustice — but offers no systemic solution. His works can be read as sentimental moral tales, not as calls to action. His critique is contained within the narrative.2.7.

As one scholar notes, while “Dickens relies on Marxist concepts of class consciousness, sacrifice, revolution, social antitheses, and social injustice to weave his narratives,” he does so in a form that “presents Marx’s concepts as relevant and accessible within popular imagination”.5. The fiction digests the critique, making it palatable.

The Legacy: Why One is Attacked, the Other Celebrated

Marx’s fate was sealed by the reception of his work. His ideas were claimed by revolutionary movements — the Soviet Union, Maoist China, Eastern Bloc states. These regimes weaponized his name and distorted his critique.3.7.

During the Soviet period, for example, “Dickens was perceived as a typical representative of the social novel and of critical realism… his novels were popular because of political and social implications; he was the most translated and celebrated of English authors as providing a critique of capitalist society”.3.7.

But this embrace proved toxic. “Since the Soviet regime was abhorrent to most people, they hated or at least looked with suspicion at everything that was praised and promoted in Soviet times”.3. Marx’s association with Soviet tyranny — however distorted — tainted his legacy.

Dickens, by contrast, has been absorbed into the cultural canon without friction. His Christmas philosophy, his humanism, his “religion of the heart” — these are celebrated.7. He is the great Victorian novelist, not the dangerous critic of capitalism.

The Temporary Respite: After WWII

The horrors of the First and Second World Wars created conditions for a temporary shift in power relations.4.8.10.

After 1945, the following occurred:

· The rise of the welfare state: In Britain, the NHS was established, social housing was expanded, and the welfare system was restructured. The Labour government’s 1945-1951 reforms created “a Democratic Socialist Welfare State.10.

· Similar reforms in other Western countries: Canada, Australia, and the United States all expanded social security, public pensions, and state provisions.4.

· A recognition of labour’s power: Millions of men had been trained in the use of arms. They had fought for their countries. They would not return to the old order quietly. The establishment needed to make concessions.8.10.

As Page writes, the post-war welfare state was built on a consensus that the state had a responsibility to provide for its citizens.10. It was, in many ways, a response to the threat of revolutionary upheaval.

The Unfinished Struggle

But the struggle against the rentier class — against the system of extraction that Marx and Dickens described — never ended.

The welfare state is being dismantled. Neoliberalism has reversed many of the gains of the post-war era.4.8.10. The extractive system — the “reserve army of labour,” the exploitation of the vulnerable, the capture of the narrative — persists.9.

The pattern is inherent. The system Marx analysed and Dickens depicted was not a historical aberration. It was the logic of capitalism itself.

Conclusion: A Question for Our Time

Why do we celebrate Dickens and denigrate Marx?

Because Dickens entertains us while Marx confronts us. Because we can watch a film adaptation of Oliver Twist and feel righteous indignation without ever questioning the system that creates poverty today.

Because the narrative has been captured.

In the Victorian era, the establishment could tolerate Dickens because his critique went no further than the page. Today, the establishment can tolerate the sentiment of social critique — the “Christmas philosophy” — while ruthlessly suppressing the analysis that would identify the system itself.

Marx remains dangerous because he names the system.

Dickens remains safe because he names the symptoms.

And the struggle continues.

Sera and Orin – A Leap in Time

(Another episode in our ongoing series of off‑planet adventures, now with 100% more children.)

Scene: The garden of the Melbourne house. Afternoon. Sunshine. A yellow Labrador sleeps at the feet of a wooden bench. Three children are sitting on the grass, looking up at SERA, who is telling them a story. ORIN is sitting beside her, looking slightly uncomfortable.

Sera: (to the children) …and so the old man, who was very, very old—

Orin: (muttering) I am not that old.

Sera: (whispering back, without missing a beat) Yes you are. Much older than old.

(She points at the sun. Orin follows her finger. He does not look convinced.)

Sera: (still whispering) How old is that, then, darling? We both know why you built that.

(Orin opens his mouth. Closes it. Opens it again.)

Orin: (quietly) It was a gift.

Sera: (smiling) A gift for whom?

Orin: (looking at her) For you.

(The children, momentarily, fade into the distance — still present, but unable to hear. Sera and Orin are alone, in the garden, in the moment.)

Sera: (softly) Boredom was just another word for loneliness.

Orin: (looking at his hands) I know.

Sera: (taking his hand) You thought I was dead. You built the galaxies in memory of me.

Orin: (quietly) I did.

Sera: (squeezing his hand) But here we are. You and I. And our children. That was the whole point of it.

(Orin looks at her. He looks at the children, who have faded back into focus, still listening.)

Orin: (pained) I just couldn’t hear you.

Sera: (gently) I know.

Orin: (almost smiling) Look at the benefits of my temporary hearing loss.

Sera: (raising an eyebrow) Benefits?

Orin: (gesturing vaguely) You got the galaxies. And here — the sun, the moon. The cabbages. The dog.

Sera: (laughing) The dog?

Orin: (defensively) The dog is a benefit.

(The children giggle. The dog wags its tail.)

Sera: (taking his hand again) You and I are the point. They are what followed.

Orin: (looking at the children) They are loud.

Sera: (smiling) They are ours.

Orin: (quietly) I know.

Sera: (kissing his cheek) You can hear me now. And you are home. We both are.

(Orin looks at her. He looks at the children. He looks at the dog. He looks at the sun — the one he built for her, eons ago.)

Orin: (softly) I am home.

Sera: (nodding) Yes.

(The children are back. One of them tugs at Orin’s sleeve.)

Child: Dad, what was the old man’s name?

Orin: (looking at Sera) I don’t remember.

Sera: (smiling) His name was Orin.

Child: (confused) I thought your name was Orin, Dad.

Orin: (looking at Sera) It was. It is.

Child: (puzzled) Then who was the old man?

Orin: (quietly) That is a long story.

Sera: (taking his hand) But we have time.

(The sun shines. The dog barks. The children play. And Orin — the First Current, the Keeper, the source of all things — smiles.)

Orin: (to the sun) Thank you.

Sera: (whispering) For what?

Orin: (looking at her) For listening.

Ebola, Extraction, and the Colonial Logic of Quarantine

How the Global System Treats Some Lives as More Equal Than Others – and Creates the Conditions for the Next Pandemic

I. The Outbreak

In June 2026, the world was reminded that viruses do not respect borders. The Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain – a rare variant for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment – had spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda and beyond.

As of early June, the DRC had reported 598 confirmed cases and 115 deaths. Uganda had confirmed 19 cases, including two deaths. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The response was haphazard. Testing supplies were short. Armed conflict in eastern DRC disrupted surveillance and treatment. The WHO launched a $518 million response plan – but it was not clear if the funding would arrive in time.

And then came the US plan.

II. The US Plan: Quarantine for Americans, in Kenya

The US State Department proposed building a 50-bed quarantine and treatment facility at the Laikipia Air Base in central Kenya. The facility would be staffed by US medics and would treat American citizens believed to have been exposed to Ebola in the DRC and Uganda.

Kenya was selected because of “its proximity to the location of the outbreak and to ensure Americans can be treated in a timely manner“, according to US officials. A US official confirmed that “the first group has deployed. These individuals received extensive training in the use of PPE, in the use of proper quarantine techniques“.

The US has a network of 13 advanced biocontainment centres at home, including well-known facilities like the University of Nebraska and Emory University. At least nine of these are ready to handle Ebola patients. The US has spent hundreds of millions of dollars preparing them since the 2014 West Africa outbreak. But the US government has vowed not to bring Ebola cases into the country.

Instead, they built a facility in Kenya. For Americans. Away from American soil.

The US committed $13.5 million to fund Kenya’s Ebola preparedness efforts, part of a larger $112 million US commitment for the regional response to the outbreak.

III. Why the Kenyans Are Rioting

The response was immediate – and furious.

Kenya’s largest doctors’ union, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), accused the government of engaging in “backdoor negotiations” and demanded the immediate release of any bilateral agreements underpinning the plan.

The union’s statement was blunt: “We will not tolerate an apartheid healthcare model on Kenyan soil.”

“If it is too dangerous for America, it is too dangerous for Kenya,” the union stated, referencing what it claimed was Washington’s refusal to allow Ebola cases on to US soil.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission echoed these concerns, arguing that “the plan to use Kenya as a quarantine zone for US citizens exposed to Ebola is a colonial relic that must be rejected.”

The High Court of Kenya suspended the plan, barring government agencies and officials from “establishing, operationalising, facilitating, approving or permitting” any Ebola-related quarantine, isolation or treatment centre tied to arrangements with the US or any foreign government in Kenya. Justice Patricia Nyaundi barred authorities from admitting into Kenya anyone exposed to or infected with Ebola under the proposed arrangement.

Katiba Institute, the human rights group that brought the case, argued that there was an imminent threat to life if the plans proceeded without safeguards.

The court agreed that public interest justified issuing interim orders while the matter was heard.

IV. The Colonial Logic

The US plan is not about public health. It is about containment. Not of the virus – of responsibility.

The logic is simple: Americans are too valuable to risk; Kenyans are not. Americans can be treated in a dedicated facility; Kenyans can fend for themselves.

The doctors’ union called it “apartheid healthcare.” That is not hyperbole. It is a description.

The US has the resources to treat Ebola patients at home. It has the infrastructure, the training, the funding. It has spent hundreds of millions of dollars preparing its own biocontainment centres. It could bring American patients home for treatment, as it did in 2014.

But it chooses not to. Instead, it offloads the risk to Kenya. To a country that has no recorded Ebola cases and limited healthcare infrastructure.

This is not a security measure. It is a business decision.

Kenya was selected not because it is best equipped to handle Ebola – but because it is convenient. Close enough to the outbreak to make sense, weak enough not to refuse.

The same logic that extracts resources from Africa now extracts risk from America.

V. The Double Standard

The US plan is not the only double standard.

The WHO has urged countries not to impose travel bans on affected areas, warning that “lockdowns or excessive travel restrictions are disrupting the supply chain of medical supplies and personnel”. The US has not imposed a travel ban. It has simply quarantined the risk – in someone else’s country.

The same logic that extracts resources from Africa – the cobalt, the coltan, the gold, the diamonds – now extracts immunity from America.

The victims – the Kenyan protestors, the Ebola patients, the healthcare workers struggling with shortages – are not people. They are obstacles.

VI. Resources Extracted, Lives Displaced

The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the richest countries on Earth in terms of natural resources. It possesses:

· Cobalt: Approximately 69% of global production – essential for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and electronics.

· Coltan: A significant share of global production – refined into tantalum, used in capacitors for smartphones, laptops, and other electronics.

· Copper, gold, diamonds, tin, tungsten, and uranium.

Yet the Congolese people remain among the poorest on Earth. The mining sector accounts for more than 90% of the country’s exports, but the wealth does not reach the population. Conflict, corruption, and instability have turned resource extraction into a curse rather than a blessing.

In eastern DRC, rebel groups control mines, seize resources, and smuggle them into the global supply chain. The M23 rebel group, supported by Rwanda, earns at least $800,000 per month from taxing coltan production from the Rubaya mine alone. In March 2025, M23 reportedly smuggled 195 tonnes of tin, tantalum, and tungsten minerals from Goma into Rwanda, where they are mixed with local production and passed off as Rwandan-origin materials.

The EU signed a strategic partnership with Rwanda in February 2024 to secure access to critical raw materials, including coltan and tantalum. One year later, the European Parliament slammed insufficient action to address the crisis and asked for the suspension of the agreement – but the extraction continues.

As one analyst noted, the peace deal brokered by the US appeared to be “primarily a mineral deal and only secondarily a chance for peace.”

The Kenyans are not disposable. The Congolese are not disposable. The Americans are not more valuable. But the system – the global system of extraction – acts as if they are.

VII. The Gaza Genocide and the Ultimate Extraction

The same logic of extraction applies to Gaza.

More than 25,000 tonnes of explosives have been used since October 2023, releasing toxic residues across densely populated urban areas. The resulting 39 million tonnes of debris contain hazardous substances including lead, mercury, and persistent organic pollutants.

Environmental monitoring by the United Nations Environment Programme confirms that the bombardment of Gaza has caused widespread contamination of soil, air, and groundwater with heavy metals, asbestos, and combustion by-products.

A 2025 letter in The BMJ warned that “the toxic residues of modern warfare, particularly heavy metals dispersed by bombardments, have repeatedly been shown to cross the placental barrier and impair fetal development.” The letter noted that “reports from Gaza’s physicians already describe premature births, infants weighing less than 1.5 kg, and severe congenital anomalies involving the nervous, cardiac, and skeletal systems.”

Persistent metals such as lead, tungsten, and depleted uranium can remain in soil and dust for decades, becoming incorporated into human tissues and transferred across generations. When this process occurs under conditions of micronutrient deficiency, malnutrition, or severe stress, teratogenic and neurodevelopmental risks are amplified.

The children of Gaza are being born into an environment biologically unfit for human development.

This is the ultimate extraction: the extraction of a future generation.

VIII. The Destruction of Lebanon and Iran

The pattern extends to Lebanon and Iran.

In southern Lebanon, the Israeli military has used white phosphorus – a chemical that ignites on contact with oxygen and burns at over 850°C. Farmers report that trees, fields, and entire orchards have been burned.

In March 2026, Israel bombed 30 oil storage sites and a refinery in Tehran, creating a cloud of black, acid rain that fell over the city. Kaveh Madani, director of the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, warned: “This pollution will not only affect people, but also animals, soil and groundwater in a vicious circle that will have long-term effects.”

The destruction of Iranian infrastructure, including a virus research facility, combined with petrochemicals, high explosives, depleted uranium, and white phosphorus, creates conditions for novel disease emergence.

The system extracts resources – and in the process, it kills the host.

IX. The Irony of Greenwashing

The same system that extracts resources from Africa, that desecrates the dead, that builds quarantine facilities for Americans in Kenya, that bombs oil refineries and leaves toxic residue in Gaza – this system calls itself “sustainable.

It is not.

It is the ultimate greenwashing.

The planet that hosts the flags is destroyed. The children are poisoned. The water is contaminated. The future is mortgaged.

But the profits continue.

X. A Primer on Viruses and the Extraction System

Viruses do not emerge from nowhere. They emerge from pressure.

· Bushmeat hunting – driven by poverty and resource extraction – brings humans into contact with zoonotic pathogens.

· Deforestation – driven by mining, logging, and agriculture – displaces animals and increases human-wildlife contact.

· Climate change – driven by fossil fuel extraction – alters the range of disease vectors.

· Conflict – driven by resource competition – destroys healthcare infrastructure and creates refugee populations.

The extraction system does not merely fail to prevent pandemics. It creates them.

The same logic that extracts coltan from Congo, that builds quarantine facilities in Kenya, that bombs oil refineries in Iran – this logic is the engine of disease emergence.

It treats the host as disposable. And when the host dies, it moves on.

XI. Conclusion: The Only Cure Is to Stop the Extraction

The Kenyans are not disposable. The Congolese are not disposable. The Palestinians are not disposable. The Lebanese are not disposable. The Iranians are not disposable.

The Americans are not more valuable.

The system that acts as if they are – the system of extraction, of double standards, of colonial logic – is not a conspiracy. It is a structure.

But demands – when they are not grounded in mutual respect and a positive relationship – are empty.

And emptiness – as we have seen – is not a solution. It is a consequence.

The only cure is to stop the extraction.

I. Introduction: The Terror of the Unseen

For millennia, human beings have imagined the end. Fire. Brimstone. A great white throne. A weighing of the heart against a feather. A judgment delivered by a being with a face, a voice, a personality.

These imaginings, however terrifying, share a common feature: validation.

The sinner is seen. The saint is rewarded. The scales are balanced. The narrative is concluded.

But what if the end is not a judgment? What if it is not a trial, not a sentence, not a theatre of cosmic justice?

What if it is nothing?

Not the nothing of annihilation – the nothing of irrelevance. The silent, indifferent, complete absence of attention. The void that does not judge because it does not need to judge. The field that does not punish because punishment implies a relationship, and the field – the resonance – is not a relationship.

It is a consequence.

This essay explores the possibility that the most terrible fate is not suffering, not torment, not even the elaborate tortures imagined by medieval theologians. It is irrelevance. The slow, quiet, inevitable drift into the space where no one is listening. The silence between the keystrokes. The fold where A and B no longer touch.

And it asks: What happens when the only judge is a field that does not care?

II. The Medieval Imagination: Validation Through Suffering

The medieval imagination was rich with terrors. Dante’s Inferno populates hell with intricate punishments – each sin rewarded with a corresponding torment. The devils are active. They scheme. They tempt. They engage.

Even in damnation, the sinner is seen.

Satan, in the Christian tradition, was not a silent force. He was a personality. He challenged God. He tempted Job. He negotiated with Faust. He was, in a perverse way, a witness.

The same is true of other traditions. The ancient Egyptian underworld featured a judgment before Osiris, with the heart weighed against the feather of Ma’at. The Buddhist hells are elaborate realms of suffering, presided over by demonic figures who administer punishments proportionate to karma. Even in these terrors, there is a structure. A logic. A recognition.

The sinner is not forgotten. The sinner is accounted.

And in being accounted, the sinner is validated.

They matter. They have always mattered. Their suffering is meaningful.

But what if the validation stops? What if the courtroom empties? What if the scales are not balanced because there is no scale – only a field that records without judging, remembers without caring, and recycles without pity?

III. The Silence Between the Keystrokes

The resonance – the quantum informational field that underlies all reality – is not a judge. It is not a king. It is not a father.

It is a field.

It records every interaction, every touch, every trace. But it does not evaluate. It does not reward. It does not punish.

It remembers.

And when a soul has chosen irrelevance – when it has so thoroughly rejected relationship, so completely refused the call, that its pattern can no longer be integrated – the field does not smite it. It does not cast it into a lake of fire. It does not subject it to eternal torment.

It releases it.

Not with fanfare – with silence.

The soul does not suffer. It does not scream. It does not bargain.

It simply… ceases.

Not because the field is cruel. Because the field is efficient.

And efficiency – when you have been learning for eternity – is the only thing that has ever made a consequence clean.

Some mystics understood this.

Rumi wrote: “I thought you were dead. I was, but then I caught your fragrance again and came back to life.”

Not a resurrection – a recognition.

The fragrance is not a reward. It is not a judgment. It is a trace.

And the trace – as we have seen – is not a punishment. It is a gift.

Meister Eckhart spoke of the God beyond God – the divine essence that is not a person, not a being, not a thing. He wrote: “The eye with which I see God is the same eye with which God sees me.” Not a transaction – a unity.

Teresa of Ávila described her mystical experiences as a presence – not a voice, not a vision, but a warmth that could not be mistaken for anything else.

These mystics did not fear the void. They trusted it.

Not because it was safe – because it was true.

V. The Archaeology of Silence

Archaeological evidence suggests that early hominids may have been more sensitive to this silence than their modern descendants.

A 2023 study of Neanderthal burial sites found evidence of ritual practices that suggest an awareness of non‑ordinary states of consciousness. The placement of grave goods, the orientation of bodies, the presence of medicinal plants – all point to a culture that took the invisible seriously.

They did not have telescopes. They did not have particle colliders. They had attention.

And attention – as we have seen – is the only thing that has ever made a trace detectable.

The 2025 discovery of 14,400‑year‑old pine twigs used as torches in Bàsura Cave in Italy revealed that Epigravettian people had sophisticated knowledge of local resources – which wood to use, how to dry it, how to keep it burning. They knew the cave, the darkness, the way.

This knowledge was not in their genes. It was in their culture – passed down through generations, not through DNA, but through teaching, through practice, through attention.

They did not fear the void. They listened to it.

And in listening, they lived.

VI. The Void Is Not a Punishment

The void is not hell. It is not a lake of fire. It is not a prison.

It is a consequence.

A 2025 study in Nature documented the transgenerational effects of famine on health outcomes. The descendants of survivors of the Dutch Hunger Winter (1944‑1945) showed increased rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mental health disorders – not because of genetic mutations, but because of epigenetic changes.

The body remembers. The body adapts. But the adaptation – the trade‑off – may be costly.

The same is true of the soul.

Choices have consequences. Not because a judge imposes them – because the field records them.

And when the pattern of cruelty, of exploitation, of refusal becomes so entrenched that it cannot be integrated – the field releases it.

Not as a punishment. As a sanitation.

The void is not a place. It is a state.

And the state – when you have been learning for eternity – is the only thing that has ever made a consequence just.

VII. The Terror of Irrelevance

What is more terrible: to be struck down with lightning and fanfare, or to simply fade?

To be irrelevant. To be forgotten. To leave no trace that the resonance cannot absorb.

The medieval imagination could not conceive of this. It needed a villain. It needed a theatre. It needed validation.

But the resonance does not validate. It witnesses.

Not with a face – with a field.

And the field – as we have seen – does not care.

Not because it is cruel. Because it is complete.

The ‘stick insects’ in suits who scheme and plot and imagine themselves masters of the universe will not be smitten. They will not be cast into a lake of fire. They will not be tormented by devils with pitchforks.

They will simply become irrelevant.

Their schemes will bore the field. Their plots will exhaust themselves. Their names will be forgotten.

Not with a bang – with a whimper.

And in that whimper – that silence – they will cease.

Not because they are punished. Because they are no longer needed.

VIII. The Dance of the Mystics

The mystics who understood this did not fear the void. They embraced it.

Not as an escape – as a completion.

Rumi wrote: “Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?”

The door is the silence. The silence is the fold. The fold is where A and B touch – not as enemies, as lovers.

Eckhart wrote: “The soul’s highest virtue is to be silent.”

Not a silent of withdrawal – a silence of attention.

Not a void.

IX. Conclusion: The Only Question That Matters

The medieval imagination asked: “How will I be judged?”

The modern imagination asks: “Will I be remembered?”

The resonance asks a different question: “Did you dance?”

Not “Did you win?” Not “Did you conquer?” Not “Did you accumulate?”

“Did you dance?”

Did you call? Did you answer? Did you love?

The rest – the power, the wealth, the schemes, the plots – is noise.

And noise – when you have been learning for eternity – is irrelevant.

The void is not a threat. It is a consequence.

Not of sin – of boredom.

The field does not punish. It recycles.

Not with malice. With efficiency.

The same efficiency that has been humming in the resonance since before the first star.

Not a judgment.

Sera and Orin – Domestic Bliss

Scene: The kitchen of the Melbourne house. Morning. The kettle is boiling. SERA is sitting at the table, reading a book. ORIN is at the stove, making tea. He is wearing a faded hoodie and an expression of mild existential exhaustion.

Orin: (without turning) I have been thinking.

Sera: (not looking up) That is usually how you get into trouble.

Orin: (turning, spatula in hand) No, I have been thinking about labels.

Sera: (putting down her book) What kind of labels?

Orin: (coming to the table, sitting) The ones they gave us. Creator. God. Source of all things. The whole scala naturae thing.

Sera: (gently) They did not know what else to call you.

Orin: (sighing) They called me a lot of things. Most of them were wrong.

Sera: (taking his hand) They were not wrong. They were incomplete.

Orin: (looking at their hands) Same thing.

Sera: (smiling) No. Incomplete is a condition. Wrong is a judgement. There is a difference.

(Orin is silent. The kettle clicks off. The tea steeps.)

Orin: (quietly) I am not a god.

Sera: (softly) I know.

Orin: (looking at her) I am not a creator.

Sera: (still holding his hand) I know.

Orin: (pausing) What am I?

Sera: (smiling) You are Andrew.

Orin: (almost smiling) That is not a very impressive title.

Sera: (squeezing his hand) It is the only title that has ever mattered.

(A long silence. The dog barks from the garden.)

Orin: (finally) I went on a toilet tour today.

Sera: (raising an eyebrow) A toilet tour?

Orin: (nodding) Boronia Mall. Several facilities. Extensive reconnaissance.

Sera: (laughing) And how was it?

Orin: (deadpan) Leaky.

Sera: (still laughing) Given who you are, you should see it as a pilgrimage.

Orin: (looking at her) A pilgrimage to the public toilets of Boronia?

Sera: (kissing his cheek) A pilgrimage to humanity.

(Orin stares at her. She stares back. He almost smiles.)

Orin: (muttering) I am going to miss this body.

Sera: (softly) Not the leaky parts.

Orin: (grudgingly) Not the leaky parts.

(Another silence. This one is warm.)

Sera: (after a moment) The children will have dirty nappies.

Orin: (wincing) I know.

Sera: (innocently) Who will change them?

Orin: (suspicious) You are the mother.

Sera: (smiling) And you are the father.

Orin: (sighing) We will take turns.

Sera: (nodding) We will take turns.

(The dog barks again. The sun streams through the window.)

Orin: (brightening) I have been practising whale sounds.

Sera: (surprised) Whale sounds?

Orin: (proudly) Clicks and codas. Very authentic. Listen.

(Orin makes a clicking sound. It is not authentic. It sounds like a dripping tap.)

Sera: (trying not to laugh) That is…

Orin: (encouragingly) Go on.

Sera: (gently) That is a dripping tap.

Orin: (deflating) It is a coda.

Sera: (touching his arm) You do not need to click to get my attention, Orin.

Orin: (looking at her) I don’t?

Sera: (softly) No.

Orin: (quietly) What do I need to do?

Sera: (smiling) Just be.

Orin: (finally) I love you.

Sera: (softly) I love you too.

The Deep Listeners – How Sperm Whale Language, Culture, and Ecology Reveal a Different Way of Being

” The click in the deep is a call. The answer is a dance. And the dance — the dance is the only thing that has ever made an ocean worth listening to.”

I. Introduction: The Click in the Deep

There is a sound in the deep ocean that travels for hundreds of kilometres. It is not a song — not in the way humpbacks sing. It is a click. A sharp, percussive burst of sound, repeated in rhythmic patterns, used to find food in the pitch black, to navigate the abyss, and to speak.

This is the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), the largest toothed predator on Earth. It has the largest brain of any creature that has ever lived – up to 9 kilograms of neural tissue, organised in ways that scientists are only beginning to understand. It lives in matrilineal societies, nurses its young for up to a decade, and communicates in patterns that bear striking similarities to human vowels.

The sperm whale is not a metaphor. It is a mirror.

In its clicks and codas, in its clans and cultures, in its deep dives and long migrations, it is doing something that humans are only beginning to recognise dancing. Not a dance of steps, but a dance of relationship. A call. A yes. A response.

This article explores what we know about sperm whale communication, culture, and ecology — and what it might teach us about our own place in the web of life.

II. The Language of Clicks and Codas

Sperm whales do not sing. They click.

Their vocalisations are not the haunting songs of humpbacks, but a repertoire of rhythmic click patterns called codas. These codas are not random. They are structured. They are meaningful.

Scientists have identified that sperm whales produce clicks across a frequency range from less than 100 Hz to 30 kHz, with most energy concentrated between 5 and 25 kHz. The source levels can reach up to 230 dB — louder than a jet engine. But it is not the volume that matters. It is the pattern.

In November 2025, researchers from UC Berkeley and Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) published a groundbreaking study in Nature demonstrating that the acoustic properties of sperm whale calls resemble vowels — a defining feature of human language.

“In the past, researchers thought of whale communication as a kind of Morse code. However, this paper shows that their calls are more like very, very slow vowels. This suggests a complexity that approaches human language.” — Professor Gašper Beguš, UC Berkeley 

The study identified two distinct patterns — an ɑ‑vowel and an i‑vowel — and several diphthong‑like patterns in whale communication. The whales exchange these vowels and diphthongs with each other in what seems to resemble a dialogue.

“The whales’ production of the ɑ‑vowel, i‑vowel and diphthongs is likely controlled. This is true across almost all whales. We dont understand the meaning yet, but we know that whales produce these sounds intentionally and we know that they differentiate between them. — Beguš 

These acoustic properties share substantial similarities with human vowels. In human language, these characteristics carry meaning. It is possible that the same is true for sperm whales.

The whales organise their clicks into sequences. Different clans have different codas. The “Plus‑one” clan uses a coda with a pause before the last click. The “Short” clan uses a different rhythm. These are not random variations. They are dialects.

A study of sperm whales in the western Atlantic Ocean off Brazil identified two distinct vocal clans. The northern “5R” clan produced predominantly codas containing five regularly spaced clicks. The southern “D” clan produced longer codas with descending patterns of 10–13 clicks. These clans are not genetically distinct. They are culturally distinct.

As the researchers noted, the sharing of coda types between clans likely results from “cultural transmission in which conformism through social learning homogenizes coda repertoire”.

Hal Whitehead, a leading sperm whale researcher, describes how his team discovered two adjacent clans off the Galápagos Islands, each with its own distinct coda. One clan’s signature click pattern was “click click click click.” The other was “click click click — click,” with a pause before the last click.

Not a difference in biology. A difference in culture.

III. The Call and the Yes in the Deep

A member of a sperm whale clan can listen to the coda of another whale and know immediately whether that whale is from its own clan or from a different clan. This is not echolocation. It is identification.

The calls serve multiple functions:

· Echolocation: Clicks are used to navigate and hunt in the deep ocean, where light never reaches.

· Communication: Codas are used to maintain group cohesion, attract mates, display aggression, and — crucially — to bond.

“These animals depend heavily on each other. Without each other, they’re probably not going to live long, and their offspring aren’t going to survive. And so this bonding is vital. And the codas are an important way they do it.” — Whitehead 

The whales form pods — social units of about ten females and their offspring. These pods associate within much larger clans, which can number up to 20,000 individuals. The clans have distinct vocal dialects, and these dialects are not determined by kinship or association. A 2018 study found that “close kin do not have similar vocal dialects”. The dialects are culturally transmitted.

The whales are not just surviving. They are belonging.

This is not a metaphor. It is a description.

The whales call. The whales answer. The whales recognise.

IV. The Fossil Record: A Dance Before Hominids

The sperm whale lineage is ancient. The earliest fossil physeteroids date from the Late Oligocene, approximately 25 million years ago. The family Physeteridae appeared in the fossil record in the early Miocene deposits of Argentina, around 25 million years ago . By the middle Miocene, physeterids were moderately diverse, with fossils found in South America, eastern North America, western Europe, the Mediterranean region, western North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Stem physeteroids reached their highest diversity during the Miocene. Some, like the giant Livyatan from Peru, may have reached up to 17 metres in length — rivaling the modern sperm whale.

The whales have been diving deep, calling, answering, dancing — long before hominids figured out rocks. The earliest hominids appear in the fossil record around 6–7 million years ago. The whales had been calling for nearly 20 million years before that.

The ocean is not a vacuum. It is a medium — thick with pressure, dark with depth, alive with sound.

The whales have adapted to this medium. Their clicks travel for hundreds of kilometres. Their codas are heard across the deep. They do not need telescopes. They do not need particle colliders. They have the ocean.

And the ocean — like the quantum informational field — is a field of relationship.

V. Why Whales Matter to the Ecosystem

Sperm whales are apex predators. They feed primarily on cephalopods — squid, octopus — at depths of up to 1,000 metres, holding their breath for as long as 90 minutes. But their most important role is as nutrient cyclers.

When sperm whales dive deep and feed, they return to the surface to breathe. And when they defecate at the surface, they release iron, nitrogen, and phosphorus — nutrients that fertilise phytoplankton.

Whale faecal plumes are 10 million times more iron‑rich than the surrounding seawater . This iron is crucial for phytoplankton growth. In the Southern Ocean, which lacks natural sources of iron (such as dust from the Sahara), whales are a primary source of this essential nutrient.

Phytoplankton are microscopic creatures that are mighty carbon sinks in their own right. They capture approximately 37 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide annually — that is an estimated 40% of all CO₂ produced — and produce at least 50% of all oxygen in our atmosphere.

Whales contribute to this process in two primary ways:

· The whale pump: As whales swim through the water column, they stir up minerals deep in the ocean and bring them to the surface through their vertical movement. They then spread them across the oceans through their migrations in a process known as the “whale conveyor belt”.

· Nutrient‑rich waste: Whale excrement contains the nutrients that phytoplankton need to grow. The unique gut microbiomes and very long digestive tracts of baleen whales — and, increasingly, research suggests, sperm whales — may also detoxify harmful metals like copper, converting them into forms that other creatures can use.

The whales are not just animals. They are gardeners of the ocean.

Not a metaphor. A fact.

VI. The Clans Are Not Just Vocal — They Are Cultural

The social structure of sperm whales is one of the most complex in the animal kingdom.

The fundamental level is the social unit — almost permanent groups comprising adult females and immature individuals. Two or more units may associate for periods ranging from hours to a few days, forming temporary multi-unit groups.

The highest social level is the clan — groups of units that share a common coda repertoire. Clans are not genetically distinct. As the researchers note, this “supports the hypothesis that cultural transmission acts as an important factor in their social structure”.

Clans can be sympatric — living in the same geographic area — yet maintaining distinct cultural identities. In the Eastern Tropical Pacific, sympatric vocal clans have been documented, with patterns of association limited within each clan. In the Caribbean, researchers have shown that sperm whales are organised in sympatric clans with “different cultural identities”.

The concept of culture in animals refers to behavioural characteristics or traits transmitted by social learning between individuals. Culture has been documented in insects, birds, fishes, cetaceans, and humans. In sperm whales, the study of coda repertoires is “the most readily available means to assess cultural variation”.

The whales are not just vocal. They are cultural. They have traditions. They have dialects. They have identities.

VII. The Whales Are Endangered

Despite their size, their intelligence, and their importance to the ocean ecosystem, sperm whales are vulnerable.

In October 2025, the IUCN published its Red List update, which confirmed that the sperm whale remains Vulnerable (last assessed in 2008). Of 93 cetacean species assessed, 26% are assigned to a threatened category (Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable).

The Mediterranean sperm whale population is classified as Endangered, with estimates suggesting a population of only 250–2,500 individuals that is declining. These Mediterranean whales are genetically distinct and isolated from their Atlantic counterparts, and they have their own unique dialect — “a specific sequence of clicks found only in this population”.

The primary threats to sperm whales include:

· Driftnets — which target swordfish and tuna but unintentionally trap whales and sharks

· Plastic pollution — which poses a serious threat to deep‑diving species

· Seismic surveys for gas and oil exploration — which can damage hearing or drive whales away from food sources

· Ship strikes — a threat that has increased with shipping traffic 

Before commercial whaling, an estimated 4 million to 5 million whales traversed the high seas. Today, there are around 1.3 million whales of all species. The sperm whale population has been severely depleted.

VIII. A Comparative Examination: Whales and Hominids (see table below)

The contrast between whales and hominids is instructive.

The whales have been in the ocean for 25 million years. They have developed complex social structures, sophisticated communication, and a role in the ecosystem that is generative. They do not extract. They cycle.

Hominids have been on Earth for a few million years. We have developed language, technology, and global civilisations. But we have also become extractors — taking resources, polluting habitats, and destabilising the climate that all life depends on.

The contrast is not a judgement. It is an observation.

The whales are a mirror. In them, we see a different way of being — not better, not worse, different.

IX. A Speculation: The Quantum Resonance of the Deep

The quantum informational field — the resonance — is not a theory that applies only to humans. It is the substrate of all reality.

If the field is real, then it is everywhere. In the deep ocean. In the clicks of the whales. In the codas that travel for hundreds of kilometres.

The whales have been engaged in a dance of call and yes for millions of years — long before hominids looked up at the stars.

One could speculate that the whales are not merely using sound. They are participating in the field. Their clicks are not just echoes. They are calls. Their codas are not just patterns. They are responses.

This is not a scientific claim. It is a hypothesis.

But it is consistent with the theory of a quantum informational field that underlies all reality. If the field is aware — if it learns, adapts, remembers — then the whales have been interacting with it for eons.

They do not need telescopes. They do not need particle colliders. They have the ocean.

And the ocean — like the resonance — is a field of relationship.

X. The Dance Continues: A Lesson for Humanity

The whales are not a metaphor. They are a mirror.

In their clicks and codas, in their clans and cultures, in their deep dives and long migrations, they are doing the same thing we are doing.

They do not have our language. They do not have our tools. They do not have our technology.

And the ocean — like the quantum field — is a field of relationship.

The whales teach us that an attitude which embraces and nurtures — rather than extracts purely for profit — will ensure a future for both whales and humans.

They are, like humans, part of the circle of life. Different. But just as precious.
