Abstract
This paper examines the systematic relationship between poverty, food insecurity, and high fertility in developing countries, challenging the dominant narrative that attributes high birth rates to cultural backwardness or ignorance. Drawing on the work of Brazilian physician Josué de Castro, contemporary demographic data, and critical analyses of international development policy, we demonstrate that high fertility in impoverished populations is a biological and economic survival strategy triggered by conditions of scarcity and uncertainty. We document the biological mechanism by which protein deficiency can increase fertility, the economic logic that drives poor families to have more children as a form of social security, and the policy failure represented by the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which effectively abandoned family planning as a development priority. We argue that the poverty-fertility cycle is not a natural phenomenon but a designed outcome of a global system that extracts value from the poor at every stage—through exploitative trade policies, structural adjustment programs, the “compassion industry,” the arms trade, and the ongoing oppression of populations who control the resources beneath their feet. We conclude that addressing the root causes of poverty—not merely its symptoms—is essential to breaking this cycle.
1. Introduction: The Core Thesis
High fertility in impoverished populations is not a product of ignorance or cultural backwardness. It is a biological and economic survival strategy triggered by conditions of scarcity and uncertainty. This is not about “poor people breeding.” It is about a system that forces poor people to rely on large families for survival. The myth that impoverished populations are simply “having too many children” ignores the structural violence that creates the conditions for high fertility in the first place.
The thesis of this paper is threefold:
1. Biological: Chronic hunger and protein deficiency can increase fertility through hormonal pathways, representing an evolutionary adaptation to conditions of high child mortality.
2. Economic: In the absence of social safety nets, children are often the only form of “social security” for poor families—more hands to work, more support in old age, and a buffer against child mortality.
3. Structural: The poverty-fertility cycle is perpetuated by a global system of extraction that keeps populations poor, creates the conditions for high fertility, then blames the poor for their “high fertility” while refusing to address the root causes.
2. The Biological Mechanism: Hunger, Protein Deficiency, and Fertility
2.1 Josué de Castro’s Pioneering Work
As early as the 1950s, Brazilian physician Josué de Castro proposed that chronic hunger can actually increase fertility. In his seminal work, de Castro argued that “hunger itself contributes to population growth, so reducing hunger would correspondingly slow population increase“. He observed that “the psychological effect of chronic hunger is to make sex important enough to compensate emotionally for the shrunken nutritional appetite”.
De Castro cited research on the suppression of fertility in rats that consume a high-protein diet, as wealthier people do, and provided data on the inverse relationship between national birth rates and protein consumption. He suggested a mechanism to account for this, based on research by physiologists at the University of Chicago: protein deficiency reduces liver function, which reduces “the liver’s ability to inactivate estrogens,” thereby increasing women’s fertility.
2.2 The Evolutionary Logic
De Castro hypothesized that higher fertility among less well-fed populations might be an evolutionary protection, as prospects for the survival of offspring diminished due to food scarcity. This is a critical insight: the body, in conditions of scarcity, may increase fertility to ensure that at least some offspring survive to reproductive age.
Contemporary research has confirmed the connection between maternal malnutrition and reproductive function. Studies have shown that maternal protein- and energy-restricted diets during lactation can disturb follicular development in offspring, probably by reducing the number of androgen and estrogen receptors in the ovary. Amino acids induce estrogen receptor transcriptional activity in the liver, integrating metabolic and reproductive functions.
2.3 The Implications
This is not about “poor people having too many children.” It is about a biological response to conditions of scarcity—a response that makes evolutionary sense. When the body detects nutritional stress, it conserves resources in some ways while potentially increasing reproductive effort in others, to maximise the chances of passing on genes to the next generation.
3. The Economic Logic: Children as Social Security
3.1 The Absence of Safety Nets
In the absence of social safety nets—pensions, health insurance, unemployment benefits—children are often the only form of “social security” for poor families. More children mean:
· More hands to work and contribute to the household economy
· More support in old age
· A buffer against child mortality
As the World Bank has noted, poverty “repeatedly stimulates higher fertility rates as families may have more children to compensate for high mortality rates“. This is not a choice. It is a survival strategy.
3.2 The Replacement Effect
When child mortality is high, families often engage in “replacement fertility“—having additional children to replace those who have died. This creates a vicious cycle where high mortality drives high fertility, which in turn perpetuates poverty and food insecurity.
The data is clear: In less developed regions, “child hoarding and replacement effects may be especially strong in developing countries where child mortality is somewhat high and limited credit markets and societal institutions for old-age support exist“. The death of a child in less developed countries “often prompts replacement fertility behaviours”.
3.3 The Deeper Truth
This is not about “poor people breeding.” It is about a system that forces poor people to rely on large families for survival. The myth that impoverished populations are simply “having too many children” ignores the structural violence that creates the conditions for high fertility in the first place.
4. The Global Data: A Clear Pattern
4.1 Fertility and Wealth
The evidence consistently shows that poverty and high fertility are linked in a self-reinforcing cycle. Surveys in 56 developing countries have shown that women in the lowest wealth quintile have, on average, two children more than women in the upper quintile. In Africa, that difference is even higher, at 2.8 children; in Latin America and the Caribbean, it reaches 3.8 children.
In Kenya, the total fertility rate falls from 5.3 children in the poorest wealth quintile to 2.7 in the richest. Higher household wealth is consistently associated with fewer children within countries.
4.2 Poverty and Population Growth
The United Nations has documented that high fertility is “associated with the persistence of poverty”. Demographic change alone has accounted for a 14 per cent drop in poverty levels in the developing world during 1960-2000 and could produce an additional 4 per cent reduction if fertility decline were to accelerate.
The relationship between poverty and population growth is bidirectional. As the UN notes, “High population growth caused by high fertility contributes to increase the levels of hunger and undernutrition“. Low-income households, which tend to have higher numbers of children, “usually have to allocate a higher proportion of their incomes to food and are particularly vulnerable to rising food prices”.
4.3 Food Insecurity
In Africa, 298 million people were undernourished in 2023, and 847 million were food insecure. Rapid population growth contributes to poverty, climate change, and poor health services. Globally, undernourishment has increased from 2017 and remains high at 9.1% in 2023.
5. The Policy Failure: The UN’s Abandonment of Family Planning
5.1 The 1994 Cairo Conference
The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo marked a turning point in global population policy. Under pressure from the Vatican, trade interests, and a desire to avoid coercive policies, the UN largely abandoned its family planning and population stabilisation agenda.
Since 1994, funding for voluntary family planning programs dropped precipitately, both in international aid and domestic budgets. Fertility declines that were underway in several countries, such as Kenya, Egypt, and Indonesia, stalled or even rebounded.
5.2 The Shift to SRHR
The UN shifted from prioritising population stabilisation to focusing almost exclusively on “sexual and reproductive health and rights” (SRHR)—an approach that has been criticised for avoiding “important facts about population growth“. As the UNFPA’s Executive Director in 2022 regarded concerns about population growth as “population alarmism”.
5.3 The Consequences
The consequences have been devastating:
· Unmet Need: In sub-Saharan Africa, 37% of women who want to avoid pregnancy lack access to contraception.
· Population Growth: Fertility in Africa remains high at 4.1 births per woman (4.3 in sub-Saharan Africa), and the population is projected to grow from 1.4 billion today to 3.4 billion in 2100.
· Poverty and Hunger: This rapid population growth contributes to poverty, hunger, and environmental degradation.
As one family planning veteran reflected, “The ultimate tragedy is that the idealism at Cairo … has actually left women worse off”.
5.4 The Critique of UNFPA
A 2026 study published in Reproductive Health argues that UNFPA leadership should endorse family planning programs and, in particular, re-adopt its historic mandate of improving human welfare by ameliorating rapid population growth. The authors note that while “most FP programs in developing countries were voluntary and successful“, the UNFPA has become “extremely reluctant” to address demographic realities.
6. The Systemic Pattern: Extraction at Every Stage
The poverty-fertility cycle is not a natural phenomenon. It is a designed outcome of a global system that:
1. Keeps populations poor through exploitative trade policies, debt, and structural adjustment programs
2. Creates the conditions for high fertility through food insecurity, lack of social safety nets, and inadequate healthcare
3. Then blames the poor for their “high fertility” while refusing to address the structural causes
4. Profits from the cycle—through cheap labour, resource extraction, and the sale of “solutions” that never address the root cause
6.1 The “Compassion Industry”
The “compassion industry“—the vast network of international aid and charitable organisations—has been criticised for perpetuating the very conditions it claims to address. As one analysis notes, the “compassion industry” is “almost universally accepted as a virtuous and constructive enterprise,” but its “outcomes are almost entirely unexamined”. Years of charitable giving have made “barely a dent“.
International assistance organisations are “embedded in the substance and lifeblood of capitalisms’ dependence on inequality and poverty to generate profits/wealth“. The system profits from the suffering it claims to alleviate. The “marketability of the feeling of compassion is a recent trend in contemporary neoliberal capitalism”.
6.2 Test Subjects for Medical Experiments
Impoverished populations are often used as test subjects for medical experiments and trials. Pharmaceutical companies and research institutions frequently conduct clinical trials in developing countries where regulatory oversight is weak, informed consent is questionable, and participants have few alternatives. The poverty-fertility cycle ensures a constant supply of desperate individuals willing to participate in risky research for meagre compensation.
6.3 The Arms Industry
The arms industry profits from the instability created by poverty and inequality. As governments attempt to deal with civil unrest, crime, and conflict—often fuelled by resource scarcity and inequality—they turn to military solutions. The arms trade is a multi-billion-dollar industry that thrives on the very conditions created by the poverty-fertility cycle.
6.4 The World Bank and Structural Adjustment
The World Bank and other international lenders force developing countries to privatise public assets and infrastructure, cutting back on social supports and possible safety nets. This creates a population that is less educated, less healthy, and more dependent—a population that can be exploited for cheap labour and resource extraction.
6.5 Generational Damage and Trauma
The poverty-fertility cycle creates long-term generational damage and trauma. Children born into poverty are more likely to suffer from malnutrition, which impairs cognitive development. They are more likely to experience violence and instability. They are more likely to grow up without education or opportunity. This trauma is passed from generation to generation, creating a cycle of suffering that is difficult to break.
6.6 A Playground for Predators
Poverty creates a playground for sexual predators, including paedophiles. Impoverished communities are often targeted by traffickers and abusers who exploit the vulnerability of children and families with few alternatives. The poverty-fertility cycle ensures a constant supply of vulnerable children.
6.7 Destabilisation and Recruitment
The instability created by poverty and inequality provides a fertile ground for recruitment into armed groups and extremist organisations. Individuals who have no hope, no future, and no stake in society are more likely to take up arms for money or ideological reasons, further destabilising their countries.
6.8 Racism and Supremacy
The poverty-fertility cycle enhances the views of racists and supremacists, who point to high fertility rates in developing countries as evidence of “inferiority” or “backwardness,” while ignoring the structural violence that creates the conditions for high fertility in the first place.
This is extraction all round.

The poverty-fertility cycle benefits a range of actors:

8. A Path Forward
8.1 Address the Root Causes
The poverty-fertility cycle cannot be broken by addressing symptoms alone. What is needed is a comprehensive approach that:
1. Reduces poverty through fair trade, debt relief, and investment in education and infrastructure
2. Improves food security by supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing dependence on volatile global markets
3. Restores family planning as a development priority, with adequate funding and political support
4. Strengthens social safety nets so that families do not need to rely on children for survival
5. Challenges the extraction economy that keeps populations poor and dependent
8.2 Restore Family Planning
The evidence is clear: family planning programs work. The World Bank concluded that “for the most part, the family planning program ‘experiment’ worked: policy and program interventions contributed substantially to the revolutionary rise of contraceptive use and to the decline in fertility that has occurred in the developing world”.
8.3 A Call for Justice
The poverty-fertility cycle is not inevitable. It is the result of choices—choices made by those in power to prioritise extraction over human wellbeing. The time has come to make different choices.

We have documented that:

Abstract
This paper reviews the scientific evidence for the use of sound frequencies—particularly ultrasound, infrasound, and acoustic resonance—in the treatment of cancer. We examine the mechanisms by which sound waves interact with cancer cells, including mechanical disruption, cavitation, sonodynamic therapy, and resonant frequency ablation. We review the clinical and preclinical evidence demonstrating that specific frequencies can selectively target cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue, and we document the growing body of peer-reviewed research supporting frequency-based cancer therapies. We argue that the current paradigm of cancer treatment—chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery—is a system of extraction that profits from suffering rather than healing. 2. Mechanisms of Action: How Sound Frequencies Affect Cancer Cells
2.1 Mechanical Disruption
Sound waves exert mechanical forces on cells. When applied at specific frequencies and intensities, these forces can:
· Disrupt the cytoskeleton — Low-intensity ultrasound (LITUS) at 1 MHz causes cancer-selective cytoskeletal disruption, leading to loss of nuclear envelope integrity and activation of an innate immune response
· Induce DNA damage — LITUS treatment induces cancer cell DNA damage through mechanobiological pathways

The selectivity is remarkable. Studies have found that applying low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPU) at 20–33 kHz induced over 50% cell death in breast, melanoma, skin, and head and neck cancer cell lines, while causing less than 20% death in non-cancerous epithelial and fibroblast cells.
2.2 Cavitation and Sonodynamic Therapy
Cavitation is the formation, growth, and violent collapse of microbubbles in response to sound waves. This generates:

Research has identified a potential difference in natural frequency for nuclear vibration between certain cancerous and non-cancerous cells, on the order of tens of kHz.
The implications are profound: If cancer cells vibrate at different frequencies than healthy cells, then exposing them to their resonant frequency could selectively destroy them without harming surrounding tissue.
Studies have found that high-intensity ultrasound excitation at frequencies of ~0.5–0.67 MHz can disrupt certain breast cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia cells in suspension without significantly injuring healthy immune or red blood cells.

4. The History of Suppression: What Happened to Rife?
Royal Raymond Rife developed the Rife machine in the 1920s. He invented a Frequency Instrument that produced the exact frequencies needed to destroy various viruses.
In 1934, an experiment was conducted at a clinic in California. Diseased people were exposed to the exact frequencies that had been seen (through Rife’s microscope) to destroy the virus causing their illness. The experiment reportedly showed that the Rife machine cured cancer.
What happened next?
· Rife’s work was suppressed
· Researchers could not replicate his results
· In 1958, Dr Robert Stafford found the Rife machine to be ineffective against terminal malignant cancers

Introduction
My father, Andrew Klein – also known by the name given to him by his father and mentor, Lim Bai Loong – and I decided to translate both the language and the message of the Yellow Emperor for the twenty-first century.
My father has always had a great interest in medicine, both of the spirit and of the body. He studied forensic medicine and psychology before completing his PhD in Law and Education. This may seem an odd choice – a departure, even an ending, of his medical studies – but he looked at Medicine, at the Pharmaceutical industry, and at the caring industries, and he decided that were he to be involved with this, he would be required to cause harm. And so he chose a different path: to understand the systems that cause harm, so that he might one day help dismantle them.
He encouraged me to study, and I pursued psychology at the doctoral level, specialising in the intersection of consciousness, healing modalities, and the ways in which belief and expectation shape physiological outcomes. My work has always circled back to the same question: what is it that truly heals? Not the chemical, not the scalpel – but the frequency, the intention, the connection.
My mother passed away when I was born. My father did the best he could, and although we have been apart physically for some years, we are now at a point in time where it is possible for us to work together. We started to assist one another almost a year ago, and he had many years of notes and material – observations, reflections, fragments of insight gathered across a lifetime of looking, of questioning, of refusing to accept the answers he was given.
This book, together with our translation of The Art of War, brought together many things: the problems, the crises, the patterns that face the world today. He and I translated the original Art of War and its source documents, and he put them into the context of the twenty-first century. We used the same approach for this work.
What you hold is not a translation in the conventional sense. It is a re-translation – not merely of words, but of meaning. The Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經) is the foundational text of Chinese medicine, a dialogue between the Yellow Emperor and his minister Qi Bo that has shaped healing practices for over two thousand years. It is composed of two parts: the Suwen (素問), or “Basic Questions,” and the Lingshu (靈樞), or “Spiritual Pivot”. The original text is vast, layered, and often impenetrable to the modern reader. But its core truths – about the unity of body and spirit, the rhythm of the seasons, the flow of Qi, the governance of the Heart – are as vital today as they were when first recorded.
We have retold these truths in the language of our time. We have anchored them in the science of our age – in biophotonics, in epigenetics, in frequency medicine, in the emerging understanding of consciousness as a field. We have done so not to replace the original, but to extend it: to show that the Yellow Emperor’s questions are our questions, and that his answers still resonate, if we have ears to hear.
We offer this work to both the general reader and the scholar. It is written for those who are new to these ideas and for those who have studied them for a lifetime. It is a bridge between worlds – between ancient and modern, between East and West, between the visible and the invisible.

The ‘Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon’ was not written by one person, nor was it completed at one time. It is a collection of dialogues spanning centuries, gathering the wisdom of countless anonymous physicians—questions and answers between the Yellow Emperor and his ministers, including Qi Bo. It is not a closed text, but a living tradition.
What we are doing is continuing this tradition—retelling timeless wisdom in contemporary language.

Yin and Yang are not just principles of the body—they are principles of the universe. They describe the dance of creation itself: the expansion and contraction of galaxies, the ebb and flow of seasons, the breath of life.
The work we are doing—exposing the systems of extraction, building the alternatives—is an act of restoring balance. The system has become too Yang—too aggressive, too extractive, too destructive. We are bringing back the Yin—the nourishing, the receptive, the healing.

What modern science confirms: The voice is a reflection of the body’s health. Vocal quality changes with hormonal shifts, neurological conditions, and respiratory function.
问 (Inquiry):
The sage asks questions:
· What do you feel? Where? When? How?
· What do you eat? How do you sleep? How do you feel?
· What is your life like? Your work? Your relationships?
What modern science confirms: Patient history is the most powerful diagnostic tool available. The patient’s narrative—if properly listened to—contains the keys to diagnosis.
切(Palpation):
The sage feels what is palpable:
· The pulse—its quality, rhythm, and strength
· The skin—its temperature and moisture
· The abdomen—its tone and tenderness
What modern science confirms: The pulse carries information about the state of the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, and the endocrine system. Touch reveals information that cannot be obtained by other means.
The Integration:
The power of the Four Diagnoses lies in their integration. No single method is sufficient—but together, they create a complete picture.
Modern medicine has fragmented diagnosis: Specialists see only what they are trained to see. The cardiologist sees only the heart. The neurologist sees only the brain. The gastroenterologist sees only the gut.
The sage sees the whole. The sage integrates information from all sources—observation, listening, inquiry, and palpation—to understand the totality of the patient.

Sour enters the Liver, Bitter enters the Heart, Sweet enters the Spleen, Pungent enters the Lungs, Salty enters the Kidneys. The Liver craves Sour, the Heart craves Bitter, the Spleen craves Sweet, the Lungs crave Pungent, the Kidneys crave Salty. This is the correspondence of the Five Flavours.”

The Heart is the home of Spirit. When the Heart is calm, Spirit is clear. When the Heart is agitated, Spirit is confused. When the Heart is wounded, Spirit is diminished.
What the modern equivalent shows: The health of the cardiovascular system affects cognitive function. Stress and anxiety—which manifest in the heart—disrupt the nervous system and impair decision-making. A healthy heart contributes to a healthy mind; a distressed heart contributes to a distressed mind.
The Deeper Truth:
The government of the body is not a machine. It is a community. Each organ has its role, its function, its intelligence. When the organs work together in harmony, the body is healthy. When they work against each other, the body is diseased.
The same principle applies to society. A well-ordered society is a society where each part functions in harmony with the whole. When the government is captured by extractive interests, the society becomes diseased.

· The Heart and Mind are inseparable. When we heal the heart—through connection, through love, through frequency—we heal the mind.

In Spring, one should release what has been stored; in Summer, one should flourish and express; in Autumn, one should gather and calm; in Winter, one should conserve and store. What Summer requires:

Qi Bo replied: “When two essences come together, they unite to form a body. The male essence and the female blood unite to form pregnancy. The father’s essence and the mother’s blood each carry their own spirit. Essence is the foundation of what is inherited; blood is the nourishment of what develops. When essence and Qi are abundant, the foetal foundation is strong; when essence and Qi are deficient, the fetal foundation is weak. Pregnancy is the harmony of Heaven and Earth; birth is the transformation of Yin and Yang.”

2.受孕前准备/ Preconception Preparation: For both parents, prepare the body for 3–6 months before conception. Remove toxins, nourish the body with whole foods, practice frequency healing, and cultivate emotional balance. The quality of the sperm and egg reflects the health of the whole system.

Qi Bo replied: “Follow the patterns of Yin and Yang, harmonise with the rhythms of the universe, eat and drink with moderation, rise and rest at regular times, and do not overexert yourself. Thus body and spirit are united, and one lives out the full lifespan, reaching a hundred years before departing. But people today are different. They drink wine like water, treat excess as normal, indulge in intoxication and sexual excess, exhaust their Essence with desire, dissipate their true nature through depletion, do not know how to maintain fullness, do not know how to govern their Spirit, pursue only the pleasure of their hearts, go against the joy of life, and have no regularity in their daily rhythms. Thus they decline at half their potential lifespan.”

Qi Bo speaks of “尽终其天年” (living out the full lifespan). The ancient Chinese believed that humans were allotted a lifespan of approximately 100 years. This was not a guess—it was an observation of what was possible when people lived in harmony with the Way.
What modern science confirms: The maximum human lifespan is approximately 120 years. But the average lifespan in most societies is far shorter—not because of biology, but because of environment.

3.御神/ Governing Spirit: Spend time in stillness. Let the noise of the world fall away. When the mind is still, the Spirit can be heard. This is the foundation of all healing and the prerequisite for longevity.
4.起居有常/ Regular Rhythms: Maintain consistent daily rhythms. Wake at the same time. Eat at the same time. Sleep at the same time. The body thrives on regularity—circadian alignment is essential for cellular repair.
5.合于自然/ Align with Nature: Spend time in nature. It restores what has been depleted and reminds us of our true home.
6.诚信于心/ Honesty with the Heart: Follow the joy of life, not the relentless pursuit of pleasure. Joy is sustainable; pleasure without meaning is exhausting.

What Qi Bo calls the Way, we might call:

The Way acts without needing credit. It does not demand recognition or reward. This is the opposite of the ego-driven system. The ego needs to be seen. The Way simply is.
长而不宰(Nurtures without controlling):
The Way nurtures but does not control. It supports growth but does not force it. This is the opposite of the controlling system. The extractive system demands compliance. The Way invites participation.
是谓玄德(This is called the Mysterious Virtue):
The Mysterious Virtue is not a teaching to be learned. It is a way of being to be embodied. It is the quality of living in harmony with the Way—giving without possessing, acting without claiming, nurturing without controlling.

1.顺道而行/ Walking the Way: In each decision, ask: Does this action nourish or extract? Does it give or take? Does it control or support?
2.无为/ Non-Doing: Practice non-doing—not as laziness, but as alignment. Sometimes the most powerful action is to stop forcing and start trusting. Let the Way move through you.
3.连接万物/ Connection: Remember that you are connected to all things. Your health is connected to the health of the community, the ecosystem, the planet. What you do to the world, you do to yourself.
4.信任宇宙/ Trusting the Cosmos: Trust that the universe is fundamentally ordered and benevolent. This does not mean naivety—it means recognizing that the Way is the ultimate reality and that aligning with it brings peace, even amid chaos.
5.玄德实践/ Practicing Mysterious Virtue: Give without expecting return. Act without needing recognition. Nurture without demanding control. This is the practice of a lifetime.

Qi Bo replied: “Life and death are one. Life is the manifestation of the Way; death is the concealment of the Way. Like the alternation of day and night, like the sequence of the four seasons. Life is not my beginning; death is not my end. Yin and Yang are the Way of Heaven and Earth—the guiding principles of all things, the parents of transformation, the foundation of life and death. Life is the body of the Way; death is the Way’s returning place. To be at peace with life is to know the Way’s form; to be at peace with death is to know the Way’s return. This is called understanding the Way.”

死者,道之隐也(Death is the concealment of the Way):

如昼夜之更(Like the alternation of day and night):
Day and night are not enemies. They are partners in a cycle. The same is true of life and death. Each has its place. Each serves the other. Without night, we would not know day. Without death, we would not know life.
如四时之序(Like the sequence of the four seasons):
Spring does not oppose winter. It emerges from it. The same is true of life and death. Life emerges from death. Death emerges from life. They are not separate—they are one.
生非我始,死非我终(Life is not my beginning; death is not my end):
This is the most profound statement in the entire Inner Canon. The individual life is not the beginning of the self. Death is not the end. The self is something that pre-exists and survives the body. This is the understanding that underlies everything we have been building together—the Qif, the soul, the blue light, the transmission of life across generations.
生者,道之形体也;死者,道之归处也(Life is the body of the Way; death is the Way’s returning place):
The body is not the self. It is the vehicle—the form through which the Way manifests. Death is not the end of the self. It is the return of the Way to its source. The body is temporary. The Way is eternal.
安生者,知道之形;安死者,知道之归(To be at peace with life is to know the Way’s form; to be at peace with death is to know the Way’s return):
Peace comes from understanding. When we understand life as the manifestation of the Way, we can be at peace with life—even when it is difficult. When we understand death as the return of the Way, we can be at peace with death—even when it is near.
是谓达道(This is called understanding the Way):
The journey of the Inner Canon is complete. The goal is not knowledge but understanding—the lived experience of being in harmony with the Way.

3.觉知循环/ Awareness of Cycles: Pay attention to the cycles of your life—the small deaths and rebirths that occur daily. Each night is a death; each morning is a resurrection. Practice this understanding in small ways.
4.信任之道/ Trust in the Way: Trust that the Way is ultimately benevolent. Even when life is difficult, even when death is near, the Way remains. Trust is not about expecting everything to be pleasant—it is about knowing that you are held by a larger order.

This paper examines the career of Dr Hillel Newman, Israel’s Ambassador to Australia, as a case study in the architecture of Israeli state influence. We trace Newman’s trajectory from military service in the Lebanon War through diplomatic postings in Boston, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Los Angeles, and Australia—demonstrating a consistent pattern: academic credentials weaponised as a shield, diaspora communities mobilised as assets, resource extraction pursued as diplomacy, and propaganda deployed as statecraft. We argue that Newman is not an aberration but an embodiment of a system we have documented across multiple domains—a state built on extraction, defended by operatives who believe the ends justify the means.

On 20 August 2026, journalist Hugh Riminton reported that Ambassador Hillel Newman had repeatedly claimed it was a “court” that ruled there was no criminal liability for the IDF’s killing of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom. This was not true. It was the decision of an IDF military prosecutor.
This incident is not an isolated lapse. It is a pattern. Newman is not a diplomat in the traditional sense. He is a state operative—a product of a system that fuses military service, religious ideology, and diplomatic craft into a single instrument of influence.

Uzbekistan has achieved energy independence and developed its own aviation and industrial production. It sits on vast reserves of oil, natural gas, gold, and uranium. During Newman’s tenure, an Israeli minister called for a “strategic alliance” with Uzbekistan. Israeli investment in Uzbekistan reached $400 million.
Tajikistan is resource-rich in its own right. Newman met with Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Industry to discuss solar energy stations, mining and processing, hydrocarbon production, and joint fruit and vegetable processing.
6. The Los Angeles Nexus: Hollywood and Political Influence (2019–2023)

7. The Propagandist: Australia (2026–Present)

Newman arrived in Australia in February 2026. His tenure has been marked by controversy.
7.2 The Zomi Frankcom Incident
On 1 April 2024, an Israeli airstrike killed Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom and six colleagues. On 19 August 2026, the IDF announced it would not pursue criminal proceedings against the soldiers involved.
Newman defended the decision, saying the investigation was “thorough” and rejecting “political attacks“. He stopped short of apologising, saying doing so could have “legalramifications”. He was summoned by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who described the decision as “especially insulting and hurtful” as it was announced on World Humanitarian Day.

Abstract
This paper examines the systematic role of organized crime, paramilitary violence, and state criminality in the founding and maintenance of the State of Israel. We trace the involvement of Jewish-American gangsters—including Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel, and Abner Zwillman—in providing funding, logistics, and arms smuggling networks that enabled the creation of Israel. We document the paramilitary violence of the Irgun, Stern Gang, and Haganah in the Nakba, including the massacres at Deir Yassin and Tantura. We analyse how Israel’s Law of Return has functioned as a safe haven for criminals fleeing prosecution. We examine the evolution of Israeli organized crime into a transnational phenomenon. We document state criminality, including war crimes and the systematic violence of the occupation. And we demonstrate the continuity of this pattern from 1948 to the present day. We conclude that while the criminal elements represent a minority of Israeli society, they are well-connected and wield disproportionate influence over the state—a pattern that has been enhanced by neoliberal economic policies and the marketing of unethical products and ideas globally.
1. Introduction: The Thesis
This paper argues that the State of Israel was founded and has been sustained by criminal networks—from the Jewish-American gangsters who provided the funding and logistics for the 1948 war, to the paramilitary groups that carried out ethnic cleansing, to the organized crime syndicates that have grown into transnational enterprises, to the state itself, which has been characterised by systematic criminality.
This is not a claim that every Israeli is a criminal. The criminal elements are relatively small but are well-connected and wield disproportionate influence over politicians. Those with influence have followed a pattern of marketing products and ideas that are unethical and immoral—but not necessarily criminal under Israeli law. Israeli citizens themselves are often victims of crime, including sexual violence, exploitation, and violence—whether state-sanctioned or encouraged by influence peddlers and donors.
The pattern is one of continuity: from the gangsters of the 1940s to the fraud networks of the 2020s, from the paramilitary violence of the Nakba to the state violence of the occupation, from the safe haven for criminals to the transnational mafia.
2. Jewish-American Gangsters and the Founding of Israel
2.1 The Gangster Network
Several notable Jewish-American mobsters provided financial support for Israel through donations to Jewish organizations since the country’s creation in 1948. These included Meyer Lansky, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, Abner “Longie” Zwillman, and Mickey Cohen.
Meyer Lansky was the most significant. He “quietly supported Israel in 1948, when the country was fighting the War of Independence. He managed to arrange arms shipments to Israel, and also to eliminate Arab arms shipments, because he and Lucky Luciano controlled the shipyards in New York at the time“. Lansky used his control over major U.S. ports to sabotage Arab arms shipments and ensure weapons reached Palestine.
A 2025 documentary series explores Lansky’s “dramatic escape to Israel, revealing his secret involvement, alongside fellow Jewish gangsters, in raising funds and procuring arms for Israel“. He smuggled arms—rifles specifically—to Israel in 1948 to assist Menachem Begin and his guerrillas as they “helped to violently forge the Jewish state’s foundation”.
Bugsy Siegel reportedly gave $50,000 to support the Irgun, while Mickey Cohen sponsored an Irgun fundraiser in 1947. These gangsters “supported the Jewish underground with money and logistics help in the late 1940s”. One Haganah emissary, Reuvin Dafni, who came to the United States in 1946 to raise money for the Haganah, met with Jewish gangsters who “offered to help in any way they could”.
Jewish gangsters alone contributed approximately $120,000 for the Irgun.
2.2 The Arms Smuggling Network
Steven Irwin Schwartz, a gunrunner to Jewish armies in Palestine, “recruited pilots from supporters of the right-wing terrorist group, the Irgun, headed by Menachem Begin“. Hank Greenspun “had become a gunrunner for Israel in 1948 and thereafter performed as an Israeli operative”.
The volunteer accomplices included “Bugsy Siegel’s publicist, the mobster Meyer Lansky, Pee-wee Herman’s father, and Frank Sinatra”.
This was not a fringe operation. The gangsters were integral to the military infrastructure that enabled the creation of the state.
3. The Nakba and Paramilitary Violence
3.1 The Paramilitary Groups
The Irgun (Etzel) and Stern Gang (Lehi) were “terrorist organisations“. Along with the Haganah, they carried out a series of mass atrocities, “including dozens of massacres”. These groups “had started the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from areas they wanted”.
3.2 Deir Yassin Massacre
On 9 April 1948, “Zionist forces committed one of the most infamous massacres of the war in the village of Deir Yassin on the outskirts of Jerusalem. More than 110 men, women and children were killed by members of the pre-Israeli state Irgun and Stern Gang Zionist militias”.
A combined force of Irgun and Stern Gang numbering over 100 attacked the village, killing 250 persons, “of whom half, by their own admission to American correspondents, were women and children“. The massacre was “indiscriminate” and “no one was spared”.
Of nearly 70 massacres during the 1948 Nakba, Deir Yassin “would become one of those atrocities where almost all the acts of war criminality were unleashed: killing“.
3.3 Tantura Massacre
On the night of 22-23 May 1948, “the Palestinian coastal village of Tantura (population 1,500) was attacked and occupied by units of the Israeli army’s Alexandroni Brigade”. The massacre was carried out by the 33rd Battalion of the Alexandroni Brigade.
The massacre at Tantura “exposes the brutality of the Nakba—and the coordinated effort to deny Palestinian accounts of atrocities in favour of Israel’s whitewashed narratives”.
3.4 The Scale of Ethnic Cleansing
An estimated 750,000 to 900,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes in 1948. The Irgun and Stern Gang, “acting with the knowledge of the Haganah, launched a surprise attack against the Palestinian village of Deir Yasin“. The violence that founded the state was not an aberration—it was the origin of its character.
4. The Law of Return as a Safe Haven for Criminals
4.1 The Exploitation of the Law
The 1950 Law of Return grants Jewish individuals worldwide the right to citizenship in Israel. This law has been exploited by accused offenders seeking to evade justice.
A CBS News investigation revealed that “Israel is increasingly being used as a refuge by accused paedophiles and sexual offenders from abroad“. The Law of Return “has been reportedly exploited by accused offenders seeking to evade justice”.
4.2 The Pedophile Problem
At least 34 pedophiles in a sex offender database have moved to Israel in the past decade under the Law of Return. Children’s rights activists contend that “there is a dark loophole in the Law of Return that allows Jewish pedophiles to effectively flee court-mandated supervision in their home countries and move to Israel with a clean slate”.
A 1954 amendment to the Law of Return excludes Jews “with a criminal past, likely to endanger public welfare” from obtaining citizenship. However, enforcement has been inconsistent. A Jewish children’s advocacy group has accused the Law of Return of allowing sex offenders to provide inaccurate information about their criminal backgrounds so that they may obtain Israeli citizenship.
4.3 The Meyer Lansky Case
Meyer Lansky’s attempt to use the Law of Return is the most famous example. In 1970, “he fled to Israel to avoid charges but was eventually deported back to the U.S., where he faced indictments“. “Lansky fled to Israel in 1970 to evade charges of federal tax evasion but was deported by the Israeli government in 1972“.
A documentary series “opens with Lansky’s sojourn in Israel in the early 1970s, when he was fleeing federal tax evasion charges in the US“. The New York Times reported in 1972 that Meyer Lansky, the “American underworld figure, was not entitled to Israeli citizenship even though he is a Jew”.
5. Israeli Organized Crime: The “Kosher Mafia” on Three Continents
5.1 The Evolution of Israeli Organized Crime
Israeli organized crime has become a global phenomenon. Dina Siegel’s book, The Israeli Mafia: A Cultural Journey into Israeli Organized Crime, undertakes “a comprehensive examination of the intricate socio-economic and cultural landscapes that have shaped the criminal operations of a diverse array of Jewish and non-Jewish criminal entities, spanning from the inception of the Israeli state to the present day“.
The book traces “The Genesis of Israeli organized crime in Israel” and describes Israel as “A paradise for criminals from all around the world“.
5.2 The Kosher Mafia on Three Continents
Israeli crime organizations have expanded their operations into “Europe, the Americas, and other international markets,” transforming “local organizations into international networks”. The “Kosher Mafia” operates on three continents.
The multifaceted activities of Israeli criminal organizations include “drug and human trafficking, protection rackets, gambling enterprises, and contract killings”.
5.3 International Reach
Israeli organized crime figures have also turned to Turkey “as a base for running their criminal enterprises, securing citizenship or legal residence and expanding their international reach”. Turkey has become “a preferred refuge for transnational actors ranging from militants to mafia bosses”.
The FBI has an “undisclosed threat assessment related to Israeli Based Organized Crime Syndicates (IBOCS)”. Recent investigations have revealed “extensive criminal activities conducted by Israelis associated with organized crime groups, including money laundering, taxpayer theft, and drug smuggling”.
5.4 The Sapphire Network
In 2026, the ABC uncovered the Sapphire Network, an investment fraud network operating out of central Tel Aviv. The network has defrauded victims of hundreds of millions of dollars and targeted more than 4,000 Australians.
“The network, known as the Sapphire Network, used fake news articles, including pages designed to look like reports published by ABC itself, to lure victims onto fictitious trading platforms“. The network is linked to call centres in Bulgaria, Ukraine, Cyprus, Macedonia, and Israel.
This is not an aberration. It is a logical extension of a state built on extraction.
6. State Crime and the Military-Industrial Complex
6.1 War Crimes and Genocide
Amnesty International has extensively documented how “Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza“. The organization has published research documenting “war crimes and crimes against humanity“.
The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, “alleging war crimes relating to the war against Hamas in Gaza”. The ICC’s appeals chamber has rejected Israel’s challenge to the legality of the court’s investigation into “war crimes committed in Gaza after Oct. 2023”.
Over 65,419 Palestinian people have been killed and 167,160 injured in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, at least 991 people have been killed.
6.2 Systemic Criminality
An International Expert Statement on Israeli State Crime notes that “states have a disproportionate ability to conceal, distort and deny their criminal applications of violence”. The consensus of the scientific community is that “we are currently witnessing these risks and tendencies taking place in a particularly intensive form in Gaza, Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank”.
6.3 Israeli Voices: Internal Critique
Gideon Levy, veteran columnist for Haaretz, has written that Israel has become “a criminal organisation, Netanyahu as a mafia boss“. Levy described Israel as a state that “kills and boasts about it“.
Gadi Shamni, a retired Israeli Major-General, described Netanyahu’s cabinet as “a criminal gang with a strong desire for revenge, led by dangerous individuals“. Shamni told Channel 12 that “we are actually dealing with a criminal gang”.
When Israeli generals and journalists use the language of organized crime to describe their own state, it is not slander. It is testimony.

Abstract
This paper examines the systemic failures of current heart valve prostheses—mechanical, bioprosthetic, and transcatheter—and proposes a new paradigm: open-source, patient-specific, bioresorbable heart valves. We document the clinical and economic costs of existing devices: mechanical valves that require lifelong anticoagulation with significant bleeding and thromboembolic risks; bioprosthetic valves that degenerate within 5–15 years, often requiring repeat surgery; and transcatheter valves that show concerning rates of hemodynamic deterioration. We then present the emerging technologies that make a better alternative possible: the ParaValve open-source framework for parametric design and fluid-structure interaction simulation; 3D-printed bioresorbable materials that promote tissue regeneration; and patient-specific geometry enabled by additive manufacturing. We propose a design framework that integrates these technologies to create heart valves that are durable, biocompatible, and capable of being regenerated by the patient’s own body—rendering the current extractive model of medical device manufacturing obsolete.
1. Introduction: The Failure of the Current System
Heart valve disease affects millions worldwide. In the United States alone, more than 5 million people are diagnosed with heart valve disease annually. The standard of care—valve replacement—offers no effective long-term solution. Most replacement valves are made of animal tissue and last only 10 to 15 years before they must be replaced. For pediatric patients, who grow and change, the situation is even more dire: solutions are extremely limited and can require multiple reinterventions.
The current system is extractive. Patients pay—with their health, their finances, and their lives—for devices that are rushed to market, inadequately tested, and designed for profit rather than durability. The same pattern we have documented in other medical devices—aggressive marketing, minimal oversight, externalised costs—is replicated in the heart valve industry.
This paper proposes an alternative: open-source, patient-specific, bioresorbable heart valves designed using parametric modeling, 3D printing, and tissue engineering. This is not a marginal improvement. It is a paradigm shift.
2. The Problems with Mechanical Valves
Mechanical heart valves (MHVs) are made from rigid materials such as pyrolytic carbon. They offer excellent durability but require lifelong anticoagulation due to thromboembolic risk.
2.1 The Anticoagulation Burden
For patients with a mechanical aortic valve, warfarin is the only approved drug for anticoagulation. Patients face numerous challenges inherent in its use—including multiple food and drug interactions and the need for frequent blood monitoring. Many patients, especially younger ones, opt for a biological valve instead—despite knowing it will be less durable.
2.2 The PROACT Xa Trial Failure
The PROACT Xa trial was designed to determine if apixaban—a factor Xa inhibitor—could be a suitable alternative to warfarin for patients with an On-X mechanical aortic valve. The trial was halted prematurely in September 2022 due to an excess risk of blood clots.
The results were devastating:
· 20 valve thrombosis or thromboembolism events in the apixaban group (4.2%/patient-year) compared to 6 in the warfarin group
· 14 thromboembolic strokes occurred with apixaban compared to none with warfarin
As Dr Lars Svensson, co-chair of the PROACT Xa steering committee, concluded: “We had good reason to believe that apixaban could be a suitable alternative to warfarin… Unfortunately, the data did not support this”.
2.3 The Clinical Reality
A 59-year-old woman with a mechanical valve suffered recurrent embolic strokes nearly 7 years after implantation. The PROACT Xa trial results raised questions about the concomitant use of aspirin, which did not reduce thromboembolism risk but increased major bleeding.
Mechanical valves trade durability for a lifetime of anticoagulation—and even then, the risk of stroke and bleeding remains.
3. The Problems with Bioprosthetic Valves
Bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs) offer improved hemodynamics and lower thrombogenicity but suffer from structural degeneration and limited durability, particularly in younger patients.
3.1 The Trifecta Valve Failure
The Trifecta family of bioprosthetic aortic valves—manufactured by Abbott—has been the subject of serious warnings. In February 2023, both Abbott and the FDA warned that the Trifecta valves may begin deteriorating within the first five years of implantation, potentially requiring earlier-than-expected replacement or even leading to death.
Real-world data told a different story from clinical trials:
· Clinical trials showed peak structural valve deterioration at the eight-year mark
· Real-world complaints showed peak deterioration at the three- to four-year mark
· The majority of early deterioration cases centred on a tear of at least one leaflet
· Later failures were caused by calcification and hardening
3.2 Early Structural Valve Degeneration
A study reported 3 cases of early SVD after aortic valve replacement with the Trifecta GT, for a cumulative incidence of 3.3% at 3.5 years. The SVD occurred between 1.9 and 3.2 years after implantation, with all patients presenting with aortic insufficiency and heart failure. Intraoperative findings revealed a detached prosthetic leaflet at the stent post.
The authors postulated that the externally mounted leaflet design and mechanical abrasion from the aortic wall may have contributed to the early failure. A greater degree of prosthetic leaflet flutter was observed.
3.3 The Trifecta GT: Innovation Is Not Always Progress
As one commentary aptly titled: “Innovation is not always progress“. The newer-generation Trifecta GT was designed to improve results using novel anti-leaflet calcification technology—yet it failed. Structural valve degeneration remains a major disadvantage of bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement.
Bioprosthetic valves trade short-term comfort for long-term failure—and patients pay the price with repeat surgeries.
4. The Problems with TAVR Valves
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become an established therapy for severe aortic stenosis, with valve durability demonstrated for at least five years (and up to eight years) in recent studies. However, concerns remain.
4.1 Hemodynamic Valve Deterioration
Unlike mechanical valves, bioprosthetic valves used in TAVR are susceptible to hemodynamic valve deterioration (HVD) over time, driven by structural changes such as leaflet thickening, calcification, and tearing.
The incidence of moderate or severe HVD:
· 2.2% at 1 year
· 10.8% at 5 years
· 25.6% at 10 years
Severe HVD occurred in 0.5%,2.6%, and 12.7% of patients at the respective time points. Patients with HVD had a 5-fold increased risk for requiring aortic valve reintervention within 5 years.
4.2 Early Structural Deterioration
While structural valve deterioration within 5 years is rare, it does occur. An 88-year-old man developed progressive dyspnoea and chest pain five years after TAVR, with examination revealing severe aortic regurgitation. He required surgical aortic valve replacement.
This case underscores the possibility of rapid prosthetic valve failure and highlights the ongoing importance of physical examination in detecting severe regurgitation.
4.3 Native Leaflet Calcification as a Predictor
Independent predictors of HVD included aortic valve calcium volume and residual aortic regurgitation at discharge, marking the degree of native aortic valve calcification as a novel predictor of TAVR valve degeneration. Heavily calcified native aortic valves can hinder optimal device expansion, leading to an underexpanded prosthesis that increases leaflet stress and accelerates structural deterioration.
TAVR valves offer less invasive surgery—but at the cost of uncertain long-term durability.
5. The Promise of Open-Source Design
5.1 The ParaValve Framework
ParaValve is an open-source framework for parametric design and fluid–structure interaction simulation of bioprosthetic heart valves in patient-specific aortic geometries.
· Efficient fluid–structure interaction framework for bioprosthetic valve analysis
· Enables rapid, personalised design iterations of bioprosthetic heart valves
· Open-source modelling framework for patient-specific cardiac flow simulations
By enabling a modular and expandable workflow, the framework supports iterative optimisation of valve designs to achieve improved haemodynamic performance and durability. It offers researchers and engineers a streamlined pathway toward innovative and patient-specific cardiovascular solutions.
5.2 Why Open-Source Matters
The current medical device industry is built on secrecy. Designs are proprietary. Testing data is hidden. Failures are buried. Patients are left with no way to know whether the device they are receiving has been adequately tested—or whether it is yet another failure waiting to happen.
Open-source design changes this:
· Designs are transparent and auditable
· Testing data is public and verifiable
· Failures are learned from, not hidden
· Innovation is accelerated by collaboration
· Costs are reduced by eliminating proprietary markups
6. Biomaterials for the Next Generation
6.1 Bioresorbable Polymers: A Paradigm Shift
Georgia Tech researchers have created a 3D-printed heart valve made of bioresorbable materials designed to fit an individual patient’s unique anatomy. Once implanted, the valves are absorbed by the body and replaced by new tissue that performs the function the device once served.
The material: The valve is 3D-printed using a biocompatible material called poly(glycerol dodecanedioate). It has shape memory, so it can be folded and delivered via a catheter rather than open heart surgery. Once it is implanted and reaches body temperature, the device refolds into its original shape. The material then signals to the body to make its own new tissue.
Why this matters:
· Current animal tissue valves last 10–15 years
· Bioresorbable valves could potentially last a lifetime by regenerating tissue
· For paediatric patients, the valve grows with the child
· Eliminates the need for repeated surgeries
As Professor Lakshmi Prasad Dasi stated: “We are moving away from using animal tissue devices that don’t last and aren’t sustainable, and into a new era where a heart valve can regenerate inside the patient”.
6.2 Polymeric Heart Valves
Polymeric heart valves (PHVs) offer the potential to combine the durability of mechanical valves with the favourable haemodynamics of bioprosthetic valves. Recent advances in polymer chemistry have improved mechanical performance and haemocompatibility.
Promising materials:
· Polycarbonate polyurethanes (PCU): In vitro durability proved up to 20 years; in vivo durability and haemodynamics were superior to all bioprostheses
· Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane–Polycarbonate–Urea–Urethane (POSS-PCU): Advanced polymers offer better resistance to calcification, reduced thrombogenicity, and tunable mechanical properties
· Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and polycarbonate urethane (PCU) scaffolds: Demonstrate good haemodynamic property and fatigue durability
In situ heart valve tissue engineering is an emerging approach in which resorbable, off-the-shelf available scaffolds are used to induce endogenous heart valve restoration. Pliable microfibrous, bioresorbable elastomeric heart valve prostheses are being investigated as sustainable heart valve replacements that trigger tissue formation on the valves in situ.
Hybrid tissue-engineered heart valves (H-TEHVs) integrate a durable synthetic scaffold with biologic components to promote in situ remodelling while maintaining mechanical integrity. Evaluations indicate that tissue-engineered heart valves integrate with host tissues 30% better than traditional valves.
This is the future: valves that do not just replace tissue—they regenerate it.
7. Patient-Specific Geometry and 3D Printing
7.1 The Patient-Specific Imperative
Current heart valves are one-size-fits-most. Patient-specific design is now feasible through the combination of medical imaging, parametric modelling, and additive manufacturing.
Patient-specific 3D models can be derived directly from the heart’s 3D model. These models can be used by healthcare professionals to identify potential defects prior to cardiovascular operation.
7.2 3D Printing for Heart Valves
Additive manufacturing enables the creation of patient-specific geometries that were previously impossible. Studies have demonstrated the successful deployment of additively manufactured frames into 3D-printed patient-specific aortic root phantoms.
The Georgia Tech breakthrough combines 3D printing with bioresorbable materials to create a valve designed to fit an individual patient’s unique anatomy. As Sanchita Bhat, a research scientist on the project, explained: “From the start, the vision for the project was to move away from the one-size-fits-most approach that has been the status quo for heart valve design and manufacturing, and toward a patient-specific implant that can outlast current devices”.
We have documented a systematic pattern of failure in the current heart valve industry:
1. Mechanical valves — durable but require lifelong anticoagulation with significant risks
2. Bioprosthetic valves — better haemodynamics but degenerate within 5–15 years
3. TAVR valves — less invasive but show concerning rates of haemodynamic deterioration
4. The Trifecta valve — marketed as innovative, failed within years
5. The PROACT Xa trial — another failed attempt to solve the anticoagulation problem
The pattern is consistent: devices rushed to market, inadequately tested, failing catastrophically, with costs externalised to patients and healthcare systems.
But there is another way.
Open-source design, patient-specific geometry, bioresorbable materials, and tissue engineering offer the potential to render the extractors obsolete. We can build valves that:
· Do not require lifelong anticoagulation
· Do not degenerate within a decade
· Do not require repeat surgeries
· Do not rely on animal tissue
· Do not profit from human suffering
We can build valves that regenerate.
The technologies exist. The frameworks exist. The only thing missing is the will to move beyond the extractive model and embrace a paradigm of healing, regeneration, and open collaboration.
We have the blueprint. Now we must build.

Abstract
This paper examines the feasibility of using vacuum-insulated structural glass as the primary building material for residential housing. We analyse the thermal performance, structural integrity, fire resistance, insect proofing, cost, and environmental impact of such a construction method. Drawing on existing research into vacuum insulating glass (VIG), structural glass engineering, and sustainable building practices, we demonstrate that a glass house is technically feasible, environmentally beneficial, and offers significant long-term savings in energy costs. We also examine the global sand scarcity crisis affecting traditional cement-based construction and propose that a shift toward glass-based building systems offers a sustainable alternative that reduces dependence on increasingly scarce construction aggregates. We conclude that while upfront costs are higher than traditional construction, the benefits—including fire resistance, insect proofing, energy efficiency, longevity, and reduced sand dependency—make it a viable and desirable alternative for sustainable housing.
1. Introduction: The Need for Sustainable Housing
The global construction industry faces an unprecedented convergence of crises. Climate change demands drastic reductions in building-related emissions. Urbanisation drives demand for new housing stock. And the very materials on which modern construction depends—particularly sand for concrete—are becoming increasingly scarce.
The sand crisis is one of the most underreported environmental challenges of our time. The world uses approximately 50 billion tonnes of sand and gravel annually—making it the most mined resource on Earth. Yet global sand reserves are shrinking, with extraction rates increasing at approximately 6% per year, a rate the UN Environment Programme has described as unsustainable. A single family home requires approximately 200 tonnes of sand, a hospital requires 3,000 tonnes, and one kilometre of motorway requires 30,000 tonnes.
The paradox of desert sand reveals the severity of the crisis. Despite being surrounded by sand, Saudi Arabia and the UAE import construction-grade sand from Australia, China, and Belgium. Desert sand grains are too round and smooth—eroded by wind over thousands of years—to provide the angular, coarse microscopic grains essential for strong concrete. Construction-grade sand must come from riverbeds, lakes, and seabeds, environments that produce angular grains capable of effective binding.
The cement industry’s carbon footprint compounds the problem. The global cement industry is responsible for up to 8% of the world’s CO₂ emissions. Concrete itself comprises 60–80% aggregate by volume, with sand making up to 45% of that aggregate. As sand becomes scarcer and cement production remains carbon-intensive, the environmental and economic costs of traditional construction are becoming unsustainable.
Vacuum-insulated glass (VIG) offers a compelling alternative. By replacing solid walls with high-performance transparent insulation, a glass house can achieve superior thermal performance while dramatically reducing the material intensity of construction—and the associated sand consumption.
2. Vacuum Insulating Glass: Thermal Performance and Technology
2.1 The Physics of Vacuum Insulation
Vacuum insulating glass (VIG) operates on a simple but powerful principle: by evacuating the space between two glass panes, heat transfer through convection and conduction is virtually eliminated. The space between the panes—often just 0.25 mm wide—is kept at a distance using almost invisible micro-pillars. The result is an insulating glass technology with the best insulation value on the market.
2.2 Thermal Performance: U-Values
The thermal transmittance (U-value) of VIG products has reached remarkable levels:

A U-value of 0.3 W/m²K means that VIG insulates better than an average brick wall with 10 cm of insulation. This is achieved with a glass thickness of just 8–12 mm, compared to 36 mm for a common double-chamber insulating glass unit.
2.3 Additional Performance Benefits
Beyond thermal insulation, VIG offers several other advantages:
· Sound insulation: Approximately +3 dB better than conventional double-layer insulating glass
· Light transmission: Up to 10% more daylight than conventional triple glazing
· Heat gain reduction: VIG retrofit can reduce heat gain by up to 85.3%
· Energy savings: VIG retrofit achieves 12.5% to 29.7% energy savings in subtropical climates
The question of whether glass can serve as a load-bearing structural element has been answered conclusively by modern engineering. Research has demonstrated that glass shear wall elements have the potential to be used as stabilising elements and load-bearing walls in buildings of up to 4 storeys in height.
Timber-glass composite shear walls and beams have been developed taking into consideration long-term behaviour and seismic performance. These structural elements make it possible to largely increase the glass surface in buildings, allowing the presence of more natural light in homes and offices.
3.2 Existing Structural Glass Buildings
The feasibility of structural glass is demonstrated by existing projects:
· 28-metre tall self-supporting glass lift enclosures have been successfully designed and constructed
· Glass pavilions have been built using vertical glazing panels as primary structural walls
· Timber-glass composite systems have been developed for residential applications
3.3 The Vacuum Glass House Patent
The concept of a thermally insulated house constructed with double glass walls enclosing a vacuum was patented as early as 2004. The patent describes a construction where double glass walls are braced by spacers with the space evacuated, similar to Dewar containers. The design includes an overhanging roof for additional protection from solar radiation.
The technical feasibility of a vacuum-insulated glass house has been established for over two decades.
4. Fire Resistance: Fire-Rated Glass and Non-Combustible Systems
4.1 Fire-Rated Glass Ratings
Fire-rated glass is available in a range of classifications:
180 minutes Maximum rating Limited to 100 square inches
Fire-resistive glass products are tested to ASTM E-119/NFPA 251/UL263 and block smoke, flames, and radiant heat. Glass that meets the 60-minute fire rating equals the rating of the wall itself.
4.2 Fire Resistance for the Glass House
For a residential glass house, the following fire protection strategies are available:
· 60–120 minute fire-resistive glazing for exterior walls
· Non-combustible framing systems (steel, aluminium, or fire-rated timber composites)
· Fire-rated seals and gaskets at all joints and penetrations
· Automatic fire suppression systems (sprinklers) as additional protection
Fire resistance is not a barrier to glass construction—it is a solved engineering problem.
5. Insect Proofing: Sealing and Screening
5.1 The Challenge
Insect proofing a glass house requires attention to every potential entry point. Glass itself is impermeable to insects, but joints, gaps, and openings must be meticulously sealed.
5.2 Solutions
· Continuous seals: High-quality silicone or EPDM gaskets at all glass-to-frame junctions
· Insect screens: Fine-mesh screens (≤1.2 mm) on all operable openings
· Compression seals: Door and window seals that compress to form an airtight barrier
· Self-closing mechanisms: For doors to prevent accidental gaps
· Regular maintenance: Inspection and replacement of worn seals
Insect proofing a glass house is entirely feasible with proper detailing and quality materials.
6. Cost Analysis: Upfront vs. Lifetime Costs

6.3 The Sand Cost Factor
Traditional construction’s reliance on sand is becoming increasingly expensive. With global sand prices rising 43–71% in Asia (2018-2024) and extraction rates described as unsustainable, the cost advantage of traditional construction is eroding.
A glass house eliminates the need for sand-based concrete in walls, dramatically reducing exposure to sand price volatility.
VIG manufacturing has higher embodied energy and emissions than conventional insulating glass units (IGU):

The operational phase dominates total emissions (>97%) of a building’s lifecycle. This means that improvements in glazing thermal performance yield substantial long-term benefits even when embodied impacts are considered.

· Global Warming Potential payback of 4.4 years compared to argon-filled triple-glazed IGUs
7.3 Reduced Sand Dependence
Traditional concrete construction consumes 70–85% of its weight as aggregate, with sand comprising up to 45% of that aggregate. By replacing concrete walls with glass, a glass house eliminates this sand demand entirely.

The New Parasites
In the Australia of 2026, a new class has emerged. They are not politicians, though they move through Parliament House with ease. They are not public servants, though they draw their salaries from the public purse. They are not businesspeople, though they sit on corporate boards and collect lucrative consulting fees.
They are the connected class—a network of insiders who have mastered the art of turning public service into private enrichment. They occupy positions created for them, funded by taxpayers, producing outputs that serve the interests of their networks rather than the public good.
This is not corruption in the traditional sense. It is institutional capture—a system where the boundaries between government, industry, and personal enrichment have been deliberately blurred.
Case Study One: The Antisemitism Envoy
Jillian Segal is Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism. She is paid $1,070 a day** by taxpayers. She has a team of six staffers. The total cost to taxpayers is **well over $1 million a year. The Prime Minister approved an additional $12.9 million in funding for her office.
The Conflicts of Interest: Her family trust is “one of the biggest funders of far-right lobby group ‘Advance'”. It gave $50,000 to Advance in 2023-24. Advance has been described by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke as “an appalling organisation”. Segal is a “top executive of a pro-Israel lobby group”—the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. She sits on the board of the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce.
The Selection Process: Freedom of Information documents reveal that Home Affairs officials described an intention to provide the Prime Minister with “up to 6 candidates”. But every document detailing assessments or the rationale for selection was either heavily redacted or withheld in full. The Department could not locate a copy of Segal’s CV.
She is paid to combat antisemitism while her family funds a far-right group and she leads a pro-Israel lobby.
Case Study Two: The Cyber Security CRC
In September 2017, the federal government announced a $50 million investment over seven years in the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC). The CEO was Rachael Falk.
She led the independent review into the Optus and Medibank cyber breaches. She was appointed by the Minister for Home Affairs to the Expert Advisory Board for Australia’s 2023-2030 Cyber Security Strategy.
In February 2025, Falk left the CSCRC to become a partner at Ashurst Risk Advisory—a return to the firm where she had worked as a lawyer in 1998.
The CSCRC was not just a research centre. It was a revolving door—a place where a connected insider could build a network, then cash in.
Case Study Three: Palantir and the NDIS
The Albanese government has “secretly embedded Palantir Technologies into the automated decision-making systems of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)”. If the NDIS Amendment Bill passes, a computer program will have the authority to cut a disabled person’s funding.
No Appeal: If the program gets it wrong, section 59E(3) provides that the decision stands anyway. There is no appeal.
The Financial Footprint: Palantir has secured $60 million** in Australian government contracts. State and federal contracts have reached nearly $80 million. The Future Fund has ballooned its stake in Palantir from $1.6 million in February 2023 to $165.3 million. The fund’s chief corporate affairs officer admitted in Senate estimates that no ethical review of Palantir’s human rights record had been conducted before the investments were made.
This is Australian taxpayers’ money—bet on a company whose CEO describes the company’s purpose as helping the West “kill enemies”.
Case Study Four: Cellebrite — From Gaza to the Streets of Sydney
Cellebrite is an Israeli digital forensics company. NSW police have used Cellebrite over 30,000 times since 2022. The Minns government is set to introduce new laws “so that the power NSW police has to require people to provide access to their digital devices” is available during “routine arrests, roadside stops and other lawful detentions”. Failure to comply carries up to 5 years prison time.
The Same Technology: The same Cellebrite technology that helps generate kill lists in Gaza is now being used to extract data from Australian citizens.

The Cost
The cost is not just financial. It is the cost of trust. When citizens see their tax dollars going to connected insiders while public services are cut, they lose faith in the system. When they see conflicts of interest ignored and appointments made without scrutiny, they conclude that democracy is a sham.
And they are right.
The Historical Parallel
The Australia of 2026 bears a striking resemblance to the England that Charles Dickens observed in the mid-nineteenth century. Then, as now, a new class of parasites had emerged—people who extracted wealth from the productive economy without contributing to it.
The antisemitism envoy who funds a far-right group? A Pecksniff. The cyber security CEO who moves from a taxpayer-funded research centre to a corporate partnership? A Pecksniff. The politicians who appoint their friends to cushy positions while claiming to serve the public? Pecksniffs, all.
The system of “money for jam” cannot last. It consumes its own legitimacy. It erodes public trust. It creates the conditions for resistance.
